Meaning & History

Feminine form of surname Stalin, which was adopted by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. The surname itself is derived from Russian сталь (stal) meaning "steel". This name was coined after the Russian Revolution, and it was occasionally given to Soviet girls born from the 1920s to the 1950s. At that point, the Soviet government condemned Stalin, and the name Stalina dropped out of use.
