Meaning & History

Derived from Latin tace "to be silent". In Roman mythology, (Dea) Tacita was a goddess of the dead. According to Ovid, she was originally a water nymph called Lara or Lala, a daughter of the god Almo who was raped by Mercurius and eventually became a goddess of the underworld. She has been occasionally identified with Larunda.
