From Japanese 起 (tatsu) meaning "rouse, wake up, get up", 健 (tatsu) meaning "healthy, strong", 建 (tatsu) meaning "build", 多 (ta) meaning "many, much", 達 (tatsu) meaning "accomplished, reach, arrive, attain", 辰 (tatsu) meaning "sign of the dragon", 立 (tatsu) meaning "stand up, rise, set up, erect" or 竜 (tatsu) and 龍 (tatsu) both meaning "dragon" combined with 津 (tsu) meaning "haven, port, harbor, ferry". Other kanji or kanji combinations can form this name as well.

It was primarily used as a feminine name before the Second World War (usually written phonetically). Nowadays, it's mainly used as a nickname for male names beginning with Tatsu-.
