Meaning & History

Meaning uncertain, possibly derived from Nahuatl tohuatli "wooden crib" and cochi "to sleep", roughly "one who sleeps in the wooden crib". In this case, it may have been a childhood nickname. Alternately, the first element may derive from tohuan "with us", or tohuatl, a term of endearment for a younger relative.
