Meaning & History

Diminutive of Arabic أمة (ʾama) meaning "female slave". It was borne by 6th-century Meccan leader Umayya ibn Abd Shams, the progenitor of the Umayyad dynasty. In pre-Islamic times the name was solely masculine, while today it is more often given to females (typically in honour of the Umayyad clan).
