Meaning & History
This name was devised by South African entrepreneur Elon Musk and Canadian musician Claire "Grimes" Boucher for their son, born in 2020. The name was originally X Æ A-12, but was changed to X Æ A-Xii because California law does not allow the use of numbers in names. According to Grimes:
- The X is the unknown value, typically seen in mathematics;
- The Æ is the 'Elven spelling' of AI, the acronym for "artificial intelligence" and also the word for "love, affection" in several languages (i.e., Japanese 愛 (ai) and Chinese 爱 (ài));
- The A-Xii is from the Lockheed aircraft A-12, the precursor of SR-17, which is said to be their 'favorite aircraft'. The A in A-12 also stands for "Archangel", from the song title of the same name made by British musician Burial, which Grimes describes as 'her favorite'.
