Meaning & History

The name of a giant and father of Olwen in the Mabinogion, a collection of eleven prose stories collated from medieval Welsh manuscripts.

The origin of his name is disputed; one theory suggests that it might be derived from Welsh ysbaddu "to castrate", while other scholars suspect a derivation from Welsh ysbyddad "hawthorn".
