Meaning & History

Means "firm in battle" or "steady in war" in Sanskrit, from युधि (yudhi) meaning "war, battle" and ष्ठिर (shthira) meaning "firm, steady". In the Hindu epic the Mahabharata this is the name of an adoptive son of Pandu and the eldest of the five Pandavas. He became king of the ancient city of Indraprastha (present-day Delhi) and later the Kuru Kingdom.
