Meaning & History

Meaning uncertain, though it could be derived from (and is certainly associated with) the Georgian word კვირა (kvira) meaning "week" as well as "Sunday" (ultimately of Greek origin).

Kviria was a hero in Georgian mythology and a son of the gods who acted as a negotiator between the god GHMERTI and people. He was portrayed as the protector of human society and an instrument of justice. In some regions of Georgia, he was also thought to be the God of fertility and harvest, while in others he was thought to be the supreme God instead of GHMERTI. There is a festival called კვირიწხოვლობა (Kviritskholovba) celebrated in his honor.
