Latinized form of Breage, from Cornish bregh "brave". The 5th-century Cornish saint Breage is also known as Breaca or Bray. Breage is also probably the source of the medieval Cornish name BRAYA.K.M. Sheard writes, "The similarity to BRIDGET and BRIGANTIA may not be coincidental; bregh comes ultimately from Celtic *briga- "might, power", the same potential derivation as Bridget. It is therefore not beyond the realms of possibility that St. Bray represents a survival of the worship of the goddess in Cornwall."
