[Opinions] Dashiell
Recently added this to my favs list after reading "The Maltese Falcon" and seeing "The Incredibles" in the same week... Dashiell Hammett is the author of the famous novel; Dashiell Parr is the speedy young hero from the movie. Ironically, both are nicknamed "Dash". (Thomas Edison also named his son Dash, though that was his full name... along with his two sisters, Dot and Dot. Edison was a Morse freak.)Strangely, I couldn't find the name on this site... I found the information about the name on BabyNames, though I was a bit disgusted that it comes from the French "de chiel", for "page boy"... Even so, I still like the sound of the name (just as it's written... dash-ell).I did submit it a few days ago, but I don't know how long it tends to take the webmaster to get submitted names up.I'm just surprised that the first name of such a famous author is so rare. Maybe it has to do with that irritating meaning.Anyways. Anyone else like this name?

My 7 year old son is named Dashiell. I have wanted to name my son Dashiell ever since I heard the name, and never really thought much about the meaning behind it. So many of those meanings are just made up, and everyone's familiar with Dashiell Hammett.I'm really suprised the name isn't more popular. I was really worried Dashiell would become trendy.

I've liked the name for years, though I'd probably never use it. I love the nn Dash. :b I'm also surprised it's not on this site. Even if it's not a "real" name (I'm not sure whether it is or not), Dashiell Hammett is famous enough, I think, to warrant an entry. :) The only other "people" I've heard it on was once years ago, a character on the soap opera "Santa Barbara". And also triplet boys who played one baby on another soap opera (10+ years ago) that were named Alex, Max & Dash. :)

Well, like I said, I submitted it. I'd imagine it showing up in four places... and apparantly as someone's best friend... would warrant it being called a "real name".Plus, again, BabyNames has it. Does this site really want to NOT have a name that's on their rival site? XD;; I've submitted it; I bet it'll go up... sometime... ^_^

i think its a good name. Sounds hebrew or just biblical to me.And how cool is having the option of being called dash for a nm. I like it.

"Page boy", apparantly.

Well, the word is "apparently". And Miss Claire lives in France and speaks French, so I'm sure if it really meant "page boy" that she would know about it. :b

:) lol
"de chiel" would mean "of the chiel" or "from chiel". Chiel has no meaning in French. "Page boy" is simply... "Page" :)

Beats me; tell it to BabyNames.http://www.babynames.com/Names/Search/gosearch.phpApparantly from a French surname? *shrug*Plus, ancient forms of modern languages had all sorts of weird words... like, for instance, even in English, the name Todd comes from an old word that meant "fox".

Also, babynames.com (and most baby name sites) aren't known for their accurate info :b

That's not true about Thomas Edison! He had six children - Marion Estelle, Thomas Jr, William Leslie, Madeleine, Charles and Theodore Miller.http://www.answers.com/thomas+edison?gwp=11&ver=1.0.7.178&method=3Submitted names can take a year or more to get onto the site, so don't worry if it takes a while :-)Dashiell is nms but it's alright on someone else's child.

Gah! Trivia books always are misleading. Dot and Dash were Edison's nicknames for Marion and Thomas.http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/edhtml/edbio.html
