[Opinions] Mona
We'll make this short and sweet.1. What do you think of the name Mona?
2. Do you have any suggestions for middle names? Nothing like Mona Juliet or Mona Katherine, please--uber-common names don't interest me.
3. Do you prefer Mona or Ramona? (I probably wouldn't use Mona as a nn for Ramona--I'd be more likely to use Rona.)
4. Does the name bring any particularly strong images to mind?
5. Does the name sound too dated to you? (If you say yes, that'll be a selling point for me, heh.)Anything else you feel like adding would be great, too. The reason I've grown really fond of it lately is twofold. One, I love Figgs and Phantoms, and the main character is named Mona Lisa Figg. Two, I love Cat Stevens' music, and one of his albums is Mona Bone Jakon.Array

"Phineas. That's an interesting name."
"Yeah. It's Latin for 'kick me'."

1 - I don't like it at all. I think instantly of the word 'moan', and then of the Mona Lisa painting, which I find very ugly. (I know I'm in the minority there!)2 - Mona Clover, Mona Liadan, Mona Liliane, Mona Rosamond, Mona Temperance3 - I like Ramona better. It sounds more complete, and mostly eliminates the "moan" problem. Although I like Rona far better than Mona, I'd rather see Mona as the nickname for this, because Ramona nn Rona seems very contrived.4 - The Mona Lisa.5 - No, not dated. It's never been popular enough to claim a 'date'. _____________________________________________________________________Elinor"Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so."

I think it is dated, and no, I don't care for it. It brings to mind the sex-crazed mother Mona (Katherine Helmond) from the old show "Who's the Boss?". Sorry, but that's all I can think about when I hear it.Leslie, lucky mommy to Scott (2000), Delaney (2002), and Larissa (2005)

1. What do you think of the name Mona?
It's fine, a tad dowdy. What I don't like about it is the sound of the word "moan" in it. But I can overlook that, I suppose.
2. Do you have any suggestions for middle names?
Mona Federica
Mona Parmelia
Mona Calixta
Mona June
3. Do you prefer Mona or Ramona?
Ramona.
4. Does the name bring any particularly strong images to mind?
Dunno if it's particularly strong, but .. dark haired, light skinned, attractive, large nosed, artsy, critical, witty, nasal voiced
5. Does the name sound too dated to you?
No, but it does have that dowdiness about it.- chazda

1. What do you think of the name Mona? - It's not a huge favorite, but I do like it. Mainly because I have an old friend by that name (well, Ramona Camille nn Mona).
2. Do you have any suggestions for middle names? Nothing like Mona Juliet or Mona Katherine, please--uber-common names don't interest me. - Mona Camille, Mona Lisbet (or another Scandinavian name)
3. Do you prefer Mona or Ramona? (I probably wouldn't use Mona as a nn for Ramona--I'd be more likely to use Rona.) - I like Ramona with Mona as a nn. Ramona also reminds me of the character from the children's books, which is a good association for me. :)
4. Does the name bring any particularly strong images to mind? - Ramona Quinby, age 8 (see above)
5. Does the name sound too dated to you? (If you say yes, that'll be a selling point for me, heh.) - Dated yes, but not too much so. But I loved "dated" names as well. :b ETA: Mona also makes me think of Mona Lisa, another good association, but also the mother on "Who's The Boss?" who was annoying imo. LOL. There's also the "Moaning Mona" thing that most kids, or at least teens, would pick up on. But not necessarily a reason not to use it imo.

:)3. Do you prefer Mona or Ramona? (I probably wouldn't use Mona as a nn for Ramona--I'd be more likely to use Rona.)

Once again, Mona the Vampire. Also, the character Mona from Friends.5. Does the name sound too dated to you? (If you say yes, that'll be a selling point for me, heh.)

Oooh...I like all your suggestions, heh. Mona Clare makes me really happy, as does Mona Frances.I wouldn't use a nickname all the time for Ramona, either. I suppose I'd use it like I use nicknames for my sister; though I call her things like Jeannie and Siri, her name is most definitely Sara for the majority of the world.Array

1. I like it, it's short, sweet and yet spunky. The only drawback would be that it has the sound of the word Moan in it, but that's not that bad.2. I agree that Mona Rae sounds good, and of course honors you : )
Actually I have no idea whether your middle name is spelled Rae or Ray, I just prefer Rae, haha.3. I prefer Mona, I don't really care for Ramona.4. It brings to mind Mona Lisa, but you had to have seen that coming, haha. I love Da Vinci so it's definitely not a negative connotation.5. Well, I've never met a Mona so I wouldn't say that it's common and it may be a bit dated, but not to the point of unusable.
Something not listed in the entries for Mona is that it is also the Old English word for the Moon, which you can see under the entry for Monday : )Oh, and apparently Mona is Homer Simpson's mother's name, haha. One more Edit, you can see what Mona means in other languages here: http://www.websters-online-dictionary.org/translation/Mona

You suggested Mona Rae!You win the secret prize, heh. Well, actually you don't, as there is no secret prize, but Rae/Ray is always my first thought as a middle name! I like Mona Rae really well, actually. It's short (a quality I naturally tend to avoid with names), but it's really nice. Thanks. :)Array

It seems to go with everything so I use it a lot as a middlename but never as a first. I'm thinking of using it as a middlename if I have a girl.
