for a girl? I think it could be nice (with a really fem. mn - kinda like Evan Rachel Wood).

I'd love it as a nn for Evangeline, but I dislike it for a girl on its own. It's too much of a boys' name to me.

I always say this... would you name a boy Elizabeth? People don't usually consider naming boys girls' names, but they often talk of naming girls boys' names.
I think those sorts of names don't work as fns. There are plenty of strong girl's names out there, even female versions of male names. Maybe you could use a name like Evangeline, nn Evan.
The association with the actress would probably be big, as well.

I love this name. I've recently though about it for I girl too. I quite like it, but then again I usually love boys names on girls.

my (girl) friend's nn is Evan...
Her whole name is Evanthia but hardly anybody calls her that. She's known as 'Evan' to everybody and it works. It could totally be a girl's name.
It's ambiguous - like Dana, Taylor or Jordan.

Absolutely not for a girl!
Evan is a great boys' name, not girls'! And it's not like I'm against new things, but male is for males, females is for females. For a girl, I prefer Evangeline, Evonne/ Yvonne, Ellen, Eliana, Elen, Elena, Emma, Eva (possibly), Emiliana.

I've always liked Evan on a girl, esp. as a nn for Evangelina. I've never liked it on a boy.

ETA: Personally, I don't really care for Evan on either gender. What about Eve, Eva, Ellen, or Devon?

I was simply asking him to provide alternatives, other than bashing a naming style that he does not enjoy he very rarely provides any comments to the boards. I personally am very interested in what his alternatives are and I think that he would make a more substantive argument if he could show someone different styles.

I did not mention any alternatives because the thread starter (rascaldog) did not mention anything about providing alternatives; the post was simply asking opinions about the name Evan for a girl (though if someone wanted to mention alternatives, that wouldn't be a problem either).

As I said to Chrisell, I think that your efforts would be better served if you expanded upon your naming preferences in this post & others. You basically only pop up once in a while and say the same thing. Okay, we get it! Boys can be named anything under the sun, but girls must adhere to traditional naming practises (Nancy, Grace, etc) - expand upon that. Give alternatives & provide something more than your standard answer.

I never said that girls can only be given "traditional" names! The reason you see so many posts where I say that "Unisex name X is a boy's name to me" is simply because boy's names on girls is one of my pet peeves in naming (not because I have a unisex name; in fact, I like my name!). Even though I may disagree with some people's naming styles (and some may disagree with mine), everyone has a right to their opinion on this board. I stated my opinion because the starter of this thread asked for opinions on the name Evan for a girl, and I gave mine. As I said on another post here, I did not give alternatives because the OP did not ask for them. As Chrisell said, I did nothing wrong when I replied to this thread.

No. Using Evan for a girl only reinforces the idea that women need to play by men's rules to get ahead in life. Evadne is no less strong than Evan, despite what many a tryndee namer thinks.
Beyond the question of the unconscious reasoning behind m-t-f names (because I admit there are a few I really like, such as Clarence and Chester), it's trendy-wendy and will date your daughter--rather like all the girls named Jodie who were born in the 70s and 80s.

Sorry, I know a guy named Evan and he is a total "Alpha Male". I don't think it could ever sound right in a girl imo. How about Evonne?

No, not to be rude...but can't you pick a girl name? Why use up all the boys names? If you want your girl to have a unisex name use ones that are actually unisex, and not a boys' actual name. Even though most of the unisex ones are also boys names....

Use up all the boy names.... because of stereotypical gender roles.
Boys = strong
Girls = weak

I think that it could work well coupled with a fem. mn like you said. I'm not the greatest at making fn & mn combos, or I would suggest some. I use to know a girl named Ryan Michelle (I can't remember her ln though). She carried it very well - feminine, but semi-tomboyish (like me).
