Hi All!
We are between 2 names for a baby girl, have hesitation on each (similar suggestions welcome!)
Mary (mn likely Charlotte) - hesitation is that it's plain/outdated?
Lydia (mn likely Mary) - sort of a tongue twister

Oh Lydia Mary would be beautiful and so timeless and elegant. A lovely combo and not a tongue twister at all imo.

I don't think Lydia Mary is a tongue twister at all! That would be my choice, it's beautiful.
Mary Charlotte is very cute, and Mary is perhaps not common anymore, but it does have a "conservative" connotation to it nowadays, I'd say. At least for me. If I was to pick Mary as a name, I'd pair it with a much more outrageous middle, to temper the plain/outdatedness - maybe Charlotte could be swapped out for something with more.... zing? I don't know what your taste is, though.
But I will say that a beautiful Mary combo has a lot going for it. Mary has some impact now, because it's not popular anymore. A few years back some people I knew named their daughter Mary Isabel and that name stunned me with its beauty and how unexpected it was. Something like Mary Juliet or even Mary Lydia would be incredibly beautiful.

IMO Mary is a bit sweeter, Lydia is a bit more elegant.
Lydia Mary is a REALLY pretty combo. Mary Charlotte is kinda boring. Mary Lydia is pretty!
Mary is no longer boring. It hasn't even been in the top 100 for a decade, and I honestly think the *majority* of its instances as a full name are as the first half of a double name (very overplayed this way IMO, and not the same thing as just Mary at all). I can never root against a baby being named Mary... nor can I root against one being named Lydia. How about you post her astrology chart after she's born, and I'll pick which one suits her personality?

I love the name Lydia, it's so classic and beautiful. It would sound lovely on an adult but also sweet on a child. I love the nn Lyddie. That said, it would also be refreshing to hear a young girl called Mary as it's also a sweet name. I'm not a Charlotte fan though., I just don't like the way it sounds.

Mary Charlotte is absolutely lovely! I don't think it's boring, plain, or outdated at all! Both names are timeless, and will serve her well.

Tough one!
I personally would go for Lydia because I feel like it's more interesting.
But Mary's not uninteresting, anymore - wouldn't be for her own generation, I don't think. It sounds more conservative I guess.
I like both combos. I don't get any tongue twist from Lydia Mary.

I am solidly in the Mary camp. Mary is a pristine treasure. I don't find it plain. Rather, I see it as timeless. I wouldn't call it outdated either. It certainly is true that you don't encounter the name like you would have in the past. Other names -- John, Helen, Charles, Louise, I could go on and on -- aren't used like they used to be but they are classic. That's where I would put Mary.

Lydia would be a great choice. But I'm growing rather fond of Mary lately. It does not feel as dowdy anymore to me as it once did. Mary Charlotte is lovely. I'm a fan of double names and could see Mary Charlotte being used that way.
