Unusual names from 19th and early 20th century
I was recently looking at a war memorial where my great uncle is listed from the First World War and saw an unusual name on it - Vestor Viney, which sounds like a great character name for a novel to me!I just had a look on Free BMD to see if any of the other Vineys had unusual names and came across these people, all born between 1840 and 1907. Just thought I'd share as found them interesting.Humphrey Pickax

Vestor is interesting - a family name, maybe? I wonder where his parents got it from.
Humphrey Pickax is marvellous. Stealing him for my long list of silly BMD names.

Winter! Love it!Ebenezer Fothergill is amazing. And Taunton Elliott. It always cracks me up when people complain about creative spelling and stuff like it's a modern scourge, or crazy names too, cause there are some real gems in old records lol

I know! I found a few other surprises so I'm making another list of word names which I'll post soon.ETA: Taunton is a place in SW England, but still a bit of an odd choice for a person's name imo.

Humphrey Pickax! LOL!Adrian Cicel is neat, and Dotina Annie and Clara Maudina are cute. I might like Virtue Eliza, not sure... if Virtue was instead a specific virtue, then I would for sure. :)I went to high school with a Trinette.

Yes, Pickax is funny! Not sure what that's about.I remember seeing Virtue Alice on a gravestone once and it seems to have been quite well used in Victorian times and occasionally used after 1910.

Maybe Humphrey's parents were miners. Or mountain climbers. Teehee.
