names I hate too
Since that got popular yesterday, I guess I'll take a stab at it. I've never shied away from saying I don't like a name, for any reason, and I'm not one to be like "I should like this name, convince me!" because I say, if you don't like it, you don't like it and that's all you or anybody else needs to know.So here's a sampling of names I really, really loathe. I'm going to keep it to just a couple names per letter, and I'm going to list only names that people actually use with some regularity; Abishag is definitely an unpleasant name, but who is actually named this?Girls:
Agnes
Alice
Annie: Because it's such a bedraggled, barefoot, grubby Ozark farm-girl kind of name.
Bailey: Because you can't take three steps without stepping in a mess that a dog named Bailey has left.
Blanche: Because it sounds like stomping down on a box of cereal.
Clara
Cora
Cynthia
Destiny: it's not even really a virtue name; a virtue is a quality a person has, like patience or faith. You don't say admiringly of a person "She has so much destiny."
Delaney
Emma: a mumble of a name.
Elsie: a cow name
Frances: for some reason I get a very strong impression of dry boiled potatoes with this name.
Hannah: like oatmeal with low-fat dairy creamer and no sugar.
Hillary
Isabella: like a hugely overstuffed frilly couch that doesn't go with anything in your house or that you could ever find.
Jane: they don't call it Plain Jane just because it rhymes.
Joan: Jane put on fifty pounds and fell down the stairs.
Katie: simpering and fat pink cheeks
Lucy
Lena: there's a lot of names I think of as servant names, but Lena and Nora seem to be the archetypes
Lindsey
Megan
Matilda
Nora
Nikki
Olive
Penelope: I don't think there actually was a Muppet named Penelope but it's a Muppet name to me.
Ruth: a dog barking
Riley
Sarah: so completely bland and generic; even more so than Mary because you hardly ever see Sarah combos, the way you often see Mary Alice, Mary Ellen, etc.
Sophie
Sadie
Tara
Trinity
Vera: gum-cracking, hairnet-wearing diner waitress.
WrenI'll do boys after while.

I'm surprised!I was totally expecting to see Chloe up there. And I definitely pegged you as a pro-Megan type! I'm learning so much about you!Your descriptions are amazing. It makes me want to name a dog Ruth real bad.

I don't like Chloe at all, but I was only including a couple names from each letter; if I'd included every one I didn't like it would have been too long.

Another affirmation for Matilda. Cha-ching.

How did RoxStar get all this power? I, too, want the power to make you love a name by hating it. She and I have an equal reputation for being unafraid of saying that we hate names (no "It's nms" from me when you tell me that your sister named her baby Matilda, no, sirree, I will tell you it SUCKS) so I don't see the reason for this inequity.

You'll hate my name, then!

I do like:
Cora
Matilda
Nora
Sarah
Sophie
Wren - I LOVE this (but as a mn)
I agree with you one:
Alice - can't believe it's so popular in Sweden right now.
Bailey
Destiny
Olive
Trinity

Two I missedOne I missed that I like: Vera. One I missed that I hate: Hillary. This is my stepsister's name, except it's spelled Hilary. Once my stepmother mentioned how much she loves the name, which stands to reason as it's the name she gave her daughter. I remained diplomatically silent, which was the best I could do.

Almost fell out of my cair laughing (and in many cases agreeing) over these names and comments:"Bailey: Because you can't take three steps without stepping in a mess that a dog named Bailey has left."
Let's not forgett hat it means 'bailiff' Can you imagine someone introducing thier three year old in pig tails and a pink dress like this: "Meet my adorable daughter, she's a CO at Cook County Correctional Facility""Blanche: Because it sounds like stomping down on a box of cereal."
It really does!

"Elsie: a cow name" It sure is!!!"Isabella: like a hugely overstuffed frilly couch that doesn't go with anything in your house or that you could ever find."
This is absolutely the best description of this name I have EVER heard!"Joan: Jane put on fifty pounds and fell down the stairs."
If this is wrong I don't wantto be right! It's so true!! lolololololol!!!!"Vera: gum-cracking, hairnet-wearing diner waitress."
---you forgot to add that she has a tan that makes her look more dorito-raped than sun-kissed!

and don't order the meatloaf surprise at Vera's diner ...Because she's on the outs with the cook and is happy to tell you what the surprise is.

Wow, I disagree with you on heaps of these, especially:Alice
Clara
Cora
Emma (How is it a mumble? Surely Memma would be a mumble of a name not Emma)
Elsie
Hannah
Isabella
Katie
Lucy
Lena
Matilda
Olive
Penelope
Sarah
Sadie
Vera
WrenI definitely agree with you on:Destiny (vomit)
Delaney
Lindsey
Nora
Ruth
Riley
Tara
TrinityI don't have strong feelings about Joan (although Joan from Mad Men makes me like it), but I love your description, I literally burst out laughing!

Oh, I hate Penelope so much. It's probably my least favorite legitimate name ever. I'd sooner use Nevaeh.I do like Alice, Clara, Emma, Hannah, Isabella (prefer Isabel, though), Jane, Lucy (prefer Lucia), Matilda, and Sarah.
vote up1
I thought there'd be more! :PI like quite a few: (then again, I find ugly names cute just because they're ugly)
Agnes
Clara
Cora
Delaney (as a surname only)
Frances
Matilda
Penelope (the only one I properly like-like)
SophieI also hate: Alice (LICE. Seriously. I hate this one a lot), Bailey, Blanche, Cynthia (I know so many people who love this name, so I try to like it, but it still makes me want to heave), Destiny, Emma (so bloody boring. Bleurgh. Dull, dull, dull), Hannah (I know so many lovely Hannahs, so I feel bad saying that this just as boring as Emma), Hillary (ugly), Isabella (the most boring and fake-feeling of the Isa- names), Jane, Joan, Katie, Lindsey, Megan, Nora, Nikki (hideous), Ruth (so ugly), Sarah (ugly and boring), Ellen (ditto), Vera (despite this being a family name). So actually, turns out that I agree with a lot of your hates!

I agree with the majority. But...Alice, annie, clara, jane, katie, emma, lucy, lena, nora, and Sarah are the ones I either like/love or can tollerate.
Riley I see as a males name.
Matilda I dont like either. I find it ugly when everyone else may see it as stunning
Oh my god, trinity is really terrible.

Not a girl name I love to be found. Nice... Some of them I might be a bit more closer to like, but not love.

I don't agree with you about many, but I also dislike/hate:Alice
Blanche: I think of bloodless gum tissue.
Destiny
Elsie: It's okay as a nickname.
Isabella: Yup, very frilly. I like Isabel & Isabelle, though.
Lindsey
Nikki
Riley: The only good thing I can say about Riley is that at least it isn't Rylee or Ryleigh.
TrinityBrock: big, dumb, meathead name
Edgar
Felix
Garth
Jamie: Needs a grownup name.
Kyler
Ralph: Yeah, I agree. Ralph is vomit, RAYF is pure pretention (for an American, anyway). What an unpleasant mix.

Tyler
Tucker
Tanner
Virgil

Lol!!I love the descriptions you give some of these names!! I mean I don't always agree with what you said but you made me laugh so much :D Blanche is totally the sound of stepping on cereal. The only name I love that's on your list is Lena (I think Nora is super whiny though) and I like Wren, Alice and Megan okay.

I don't care for these either, and sometimes felt like the only one:ALICE. I really hope this does not become the next Emily or Sophia. Lucy, Sadie, Cora, Agnes. Riley.Lol, I never thought about Ruth being a dog barking but it is easy to think of it that way. A lisping dog?
vote up1
I'm OK with Alice on a certain few people. It doesn't work for most people and why take a risk on a name that may not match your kid? Not me.

an old joke goes ...A guy walks into a bar with a dog and says "For a free drink, my dog here will talk." The bartender says "All right, you got a free drink, le'ts hear the dog talk." The guy swallows the free drink and says to the dog "Who's the greatest baseball player of all time?"
The dog says "Ruth."
The bartender gets mad and throws them out of the bar. They get up and brush themselves off and the dog says, "I still say Ruth; Hank Aaron had more at-bats."

I can't like Alice fully, and I'm not sure why. I think the LISS sound makes it prissy and fragile.

I also hate...Wren
Vera (its "beauty" is lost on me)

Girls:
Agnes - I completely agree. It is a bit of an ugly name.
Alice - I like Alice. I think it's timeless.
Annie - Annie is all right for an animal name.
Bailey - I know two Baileys. One's a sixteen year old, one's three. They're all right.
Blanche: Because it sounds like stomping down on a box of cereal. - I didn't realize this about this name, but you're right.
Clara - I like this one. It's like Alice.
Cora - This one I also like.
Cynthia - Don't like.
Destiny & Delaney - I don't like either of them, they've always annoyed me.
Emma - I like Emma. It's the first half of my name. I think it's pretty.
Elsie: a cow name - Totally agree.
Frances - This is ugly.
Hannah - I like Hannah. It's so pretty.
Hillary - Don't like.
Isabella - Isabella I like.
Jane - It's all right, but not my favorite.
Joan - Ug-ly.
Katie - I have a friend called Katie. She's a lot of fun.
Lucy - A pretty name.
Lena - All right.
Lindsey - Another friend's name. I like it, but not enough to use it.
Megan - One of my favorites.
Matilda - I used to hate it, but it's growing on me.
Nora - I like this one too.
Nikki - It annoys me. Call the girl Nicole, for Pete's sake.
Olive - I prefer Olivia.
Penelope - I don't like it.
Ruth - Ruth is one of my favorites.
Riley - I kinda like it, but not really.
Sarah - I like this one too.
Sophie - I also like this name, but prefer Sophia.
Sadie - Enh, it's okay.
Tara - I don't really know how I feel about Tara.
Trinity - I don't like Trinity.

and the boys' listAs threatened.Adrian
Angus: I like this only on a bun topped with cheese and bacon and all the trimmings.
Brock: choking on broccoli.
Brody
Connor
Cyrus
Dean
Ethan
Edgar: it's just a very creepy sond, like a hit man who dissolves bodies in tubs of acid while twirling his mustache and charming the ladies with his accordion playing.
Felix: Edgar's silly, grinning, fussy assistant
Garth: like throwing up
Gideon
Harvey
Ian: just a whine.
Julian
Jamie
Keith
Kyler
Leon
Liam
Matthew: the Sarah of boys' names
Martin: No real idea why, but it seems to me I've run across too many "gay best friends" named Martin in books, all of whom seem to be caterers or interior decorators and very Mary Sue-ish.
Neil
Oliver: it slithers in my mouth like liver.
Otis
Percy
Ralph: goes double if somebody insists on saying it Rafe; triple if that person is American.

I love Adrian and Gideon. I like Garth, Seth and Virgil. I like Jamie on a little boy but don't think it's suitable for a grown man. I dislike most of the rest of your list, though some I'm neutral about.I had a great-uncle by marriage named Edgar. Remember my went-crazy-when-she-hit-menopause Great Aunt Muriel? Uncle Edgar was her husband. He was such a nice, sweet old guy that it's funny to read your impression of Edgar.

Brock is such an ugly sound. I don't know why anyone would want to use it on a child. I don't care for most of the others either, with the exception of Ethan, Ian, Liam, Matthew, and Oliver. I don't much like for Adrian, Connor, or Martin but I wouldn't say I hate them.
vote up1
I like creepyI actually love Edgar cos it sounds like a character Vincent Price would ham up in an old horror film. I love that vibe.I like Felix, but I must agree again. I like Gideon and maybe Cyrus too, although I know a really perverted hillbilly (I live in the home counties in the UK, so that's very odd indeed) type called Cyrus who may have ruined it for me.

Lol againTotally agree with Edgar!! He was the bad guy in the Aristocats too.
There's more names on your boy list that I love then on your girls one.I love Xander, Oliver, Leon and Liam (happy that Leo didn't make the list!) Jamie (like it better on a girl though) Julian, Conner, and Adrian is one of my all-time favourites.

You know, I've been trying to figure out for a while what puts me off the name Ian, which is considerably more "normal" than many other names I come across on a day-to-day basis. But you're right: it's one giant whine. Same goes for Neil.Brock, to me, has always sounded like a douchey jock pumped full of steroids. I cannot shake that image for the life of me.Garth also does sound like throw-up, and Ralph is a literal synonym for throwing up, so I agree with you on these as well.I would like Felix, if it weren't such a cat name. (Same with Sebastian.)

I also hate...Xander (though I like Alex/Alexander)
Wendell (this is the carsick kid from "The Simpsons", isn't it?)
Virgil (virgin)
Tanner
Tucker
Tyler
Percy
Kyler
Keith
Gideon (YES. Something about the way it sounds makes me CRINGE.)
Garth (party on, Garth!)
Connor (so boring)
Brody

Going with the ones I agree with you on this time. Adrian, Brock, Brody, Connor, Cyrus, Ethan (it's so whiny), Garth, Harvey, Ian, Jamie, Keith (makes me want to vomit, not once, not twice, but at least three times over), Kyler, Leon (yet I love most other Leo- names), Liam (bleurgh), Matthew (a bit of me dies every time I see a new baby named Matthew), Ryan, Seth, Tyler, Tucker, Tanner, Virgil (though it does remind me of Thunderbirds so points for that), Wendell

I love --
Agnes, Alice, Frances, Jane (mainly because of Nick Drake), Nora, Penelope, WrenI don't mind --
Annie, Clara, Cora, Delaney, Emma (if only it weren't so common!), Elsie, Hannah (due to personal associations), Joan (I think Joanie is precious), Lucy (again, stupidly common), Lena, Matilda, Nikki (more personal associations) Olive. Everything else, though there isn't much, I agree with you on.

Of your hate list I like Cynthia, Lucy, and Sarah. Yes, I know I've complained of being really really sick of Sarah due to its massive popularity, and I am, but that doesn't mean I don't like it. I do.
The ones I particularly dislike and am really with you on are:Blanche
Hannah -- didn't know you were another Hannah hater, doesn't seem to be many of us.
Isabella -- Thank you. I thought I was the only one.
Joan -- but I don't hate Jane, just think it's too generic.
Lindsey
Matilda
Olive
Ruth
Sadie
Trinity
WrenAny other I'm neutral.
