Re: Uncommon names on O, P, Q, R and S (long)
I like:Oberon - for a cat or a pet. Not so much for a kid. Midsummer's Night is studied at yr7 here, and the 'king of the fairies' association could haunt a kid throughout school. It is pretty cool, but not a good idea in real life.
Octavia - love, love, love this name. A lot.
Odette - is growing on me. I know it has a ballerina fairy-tale lacey association, but the sound and look is, to me, very heavy, simple and rounded.
Opal - I love opals, they're one of my favourite precious/semi-precious stones. And the name itself is kinda cute and retro. I don't think it'd work in real life, though.
Ottilie - super pretty.
Ottoline - clunky, dorky and amazing. It's not as pretty as Ottilie, but I like it just as much.
Perdita - I've liked it since the Terry Pratchett character. It's silly and frilly with a morbid meaning, it's kinda neat.
Philomena - clunky, but kinda interesting. I prefer Philomela / Philomel's meaning, but Philomena kinda rolls heavily off the tongue.
Roland - love. I like Stephen King, and it has a dorky, geeky link to the 'anti-hero' of his Dark Tower series. Since I got way too into that series and the last book ruined me, I'm pretty sure my love of Roland comes at least in part from the books. I've never met anyone else who likes it or thinks it would work as a name, so I guess I'd have to use it as middle name if at all.
~~~Other thoughts:
Obadiah - I *hate* -iah names - pretty much all of them. They're so fusty and Biblical and... well, the only place I can imagine them working without raising eyebrows is America. Obadiah's one of my least favourites. It's just unattractive.
Odell - brings to mind a slow-witted simpleton in undone overalls. It's heavy sounding and too far on the side of rustic.
Ogden - ugly sound, and tangled pretty tightly with Ogden Nash.
Omega - ahahahaa. Not good.
Osbert - terrible
Oswald - Oswald Mosley and Lee Harvey Oswald. Two very good reasons not to use that name. A third is that it's hideous, so I can see why it's rare.
Oswin - eugh. I like Oscar, I like Oisin, but the other Os names can fade into obscurity as far as I'm concerned. Not even charmingly clunky.
Percival - I had a pet fish named this! My parents picked it. When he died of old age, I cried for about a month. Don't judge me, I was six or something.
Peregrine - falcons and Tolkien are cool associations, but I just find this a bit hippy-dippy.
Petena - patina. Nope.
Philander - haha!
Phineas - I flip-flop between liking this and hating it. It's really cool but it also looks a tiny bit like penis - the initial p, final s, with an i, e and n is enough to make me double take.
Phyllida - horrid. I hate Phyllis and most people agree that that's a name that should stay unpopular. Phyllida really isn't any better.
Posy - twee. Also looks like it's spelt wrong.
Price - not good.
Primrose - eugh. Sugarsweet twee fluff. Take it away! I -like- sweet and frilly and girly and fluff and Primrose is almost toothache-inducing sweetness and fluff.
Primula - *squeezy. cheez.*
Prince / Princess - ahahahaha. Obvious why this is rare.
Prosper - I've met quite a few people named this! It's used a bit in Afro-Caribbean communities and African communities here. It’s not that weird in person.
Prunella - ewww.
Rayner - Like that guy on The Simpsons?
Reenie - Too much like renal.
Rex - A doggie name!
Rhonda / Rhona - makes me think of huge glasses, a bad haircut, terrible dress-sense, poor posture and some kind of nasal problem. An old-maid / perpetual wallflower type of name.
Richmal - bleaurg.
Rosaleen - I hate this a stupid amount. I like Rosalind. Rosaleen is just a terrible mockery.
Saul - Ugly. Ugly. Ugly.
Scilla - Ugly. It might make a cool name for a pet frog/newt/fish or maybe even some kind of reptile... but it's not a nice sounding or looking name by any means.
Selwyn - snotty, snobbish and spineless sounding. It also makes me think of sewers.
Silas - slithery.
Septimus - haha! I'm amazed this is used at all these days. Terrible, makes me think of 'septic'.
