Tomboy names wanted?
I'm considering changing one of my character's name. Originally it was Dillan (A GIRL) pronounced as Dylan and Dillon but that goes against my most valid hatred about masculine names on girls. I think I enjoyed the spelling more than anything.
Perhaps I can change the spelling to Dillon and have it be the surname? Original name: Dillan Marie Fletwick (feel free to suggest first names, middle and surnames.
Its not a definit that i'll change her whole name but I'd like to know what my options and potentials are. Perhaps some embarrassing sounding name that makes the character go by her surname instead. Though not gutwrenchingly bad. I don't know. Your input?

How about Darcy/Darcey/Darci? The first two spellings are unisex; the third is feminine but gives off a tomboyish vibe. One of my older cousins is Darci, although ironically she's actually a girly girl.

I think you might give her Dillan as her middle name, and have her going by her middle name because her first name is too something. Maybe a too-nice name like Cornelia or Priscilla Dillan Fletwick? A dated name like Gloria or Harriet? Maybe a semi-tacky value name like Chastity or Patience? Maybe something hippie or eccentric like Rainbow or America or Petula or Karma or Honey? Something foreign from her background - or not from her own background, that was chosen for another reason - Elizaveta, Caoimhe, Priya, Zaynab, Yael, Mair, Capucine, Riko?

It's funny when I see people call Mair foreign. It's such a filler name here, I know at least four people with that as a middle name- and those are only out of my close friends!

Neat. I've never seen it at all in real life, anywhere.

Perhaps she could be one of these kids named after the place where she was conceived.Austin, perhaps, or Dallas. Not Galveston, probably! Somehow, Texas comes to mind.

A good naming suggestion I've seen is to name your characters the way their parents would, not by their personality. Is the character a tomboy? Maybe her parents chose a super girly first name that she doesn't like, and that's why she decided to go by her surname.

Nah, I usually choose names based on their personality (what name fits best with their personality, look, persona) or names that I LUV or at least completely tolerate for the characters that I take to the heart.
Names that fit in with their siblings. That sort of thing.
My character isn't necessarily a tomboy type (actually she isn't at all. She's the very definition of the exact opposite) I'm definitely leaning towards changing the spelling to Dillon and have that be her surname. Have her normally go by her surname as so I'm not *completely* changing her name. The only excuse for her I can come up with is that she perhaps prefer her masculine surname over her first name despite being a girly type or just wants an edge to her. She's described as being around 16 or 17. Average height and weight. Naturally brown\wavy hair with blue eyes. (Attractive looking) she's one of those (and please excuse me. This is only my characters personality) popular, snobbish, snotty, selfish, gossipy types. One of those stereotypical kinds you see in films. But I don't necessarily need her name to be stereotypical. I essentially now just need a female name to go with the surname. I'll most likely keep the middle name. I can write in that Marie (even though a complete filler name) is a family name

If there is more than one Sophia D. at school, maybe someone would say, "Hey, Dillon is a first name, too. Let's call Sophia Dillon just Dillon." The first name isn't embarrassing, just too common. One year in high school, someone said that everyone should start calling me Dani from my last name. I said no, my cousin is Danielle, nn Dani, I'm not using that nn.Anything really old and fusty or you can't imagine on a real life kid, like Gertrude, Agatha. I'm fine with a character that doesn't have a name that I love/ like. The name needs to fit the character, who is named by two characters whose tastes could be very different than mine, 'not me'. If Dillan fits her, keep it.

I like Dara as a "tomboy" (or unisex) name. She could be Dara Marie Fletwick?Or something a bit more embarrassing like Geraldine or Gertrude? Or if she's a tomboy, maybe something overly feminine like Anastasia, Rosalind or Vivienne that makes her want to go by something a bit more unisex sounding like her surname?

Hmm, I see Dara as a complete girls namePerhaps i'll change the spelling to Dillan to Dillon and have it be the surname. I'm really leaning towards that now
Gertrude Dillon perhaps.
