All are fine names. I would rate them as follows:

1 Jacob - I love Jake as a standalone name as well.

2 Thomas I prefer the full name to Tom or Tam.

Samuel is probably my favorite, but Thomas is nice. All are solid choices though.

I would only ever consider Thomas: the name of my two grandfathers, and with much less religious baggage than Samuel and Jacob, in spite of being a New Testament name itself. And I far prefer Tom to Sam or Jake.

I have always thought Samuel (sa-mule-ehl) as a very unpleasant sound and looks unattractive (again the uel part) so that one is out for me. I do like the sweet, boy-next-door nickname Sam.

Thomas is softer (certainly not in a bad way!) than Jacob which sounds tougher. I like them equally. Jacob has been used in my family since the 17th century, but my mother wanted to name me Thomas so I have a soft spot for that too.

I think all three lend themselves for a nickname (unavoidable) so take that into consideration. Which do you prefer? Sam, Tom or Jake?

I like Samuel for a first name. Thomas is ok for a middle name. I wouldn’t use it for a first name because I’m not that keen on Tom. Jacob is ok, but not my style.

I'd go with Thomas, because I think that it's the nicest!

Jacob is the least boring, I've never known or met one (somehow). I love Sam but hate Samuel with a passion, so Jacob it is. Jake is cute, it's a dog name, I like that.

I prefer Samuel. I have positive associations with Sam. It is simple and overused, but it makes me think of a good guy.

I like the meaning of Samuel better than the other two. Jacob's meaning "supplanter" and Thomas meaning "twin" aren't particularly interesting to me. Plus the Biblical Samuel was a wise prophet character while Jacob was rather ruthless and shady.

I love Samuel the most. It's very handsome and multicultural. I'm actually the opposite of everyone else, as I dislike Sam and much prefer Samuel.

Samuel is my favourite. The meaning, the biblical story, it’s just a great name.

I'll choose Jacob over most names. I really like it for some reason. I like Thomas and think that Samuel is alright. I'm not big on it.
