From the Gothic name Audawakrs meaning "wealthy and vigilant", derived from the Germanic elements od "wealth" and wacar "vigilant". Odovacar was a 5th-century Gothic leader who overthrew the last western Roman emperor and became the first barbarian king of Italy.
