Seriously. How many people in this world have that name who arent "Greek". Give me a break.
Yeah thats basically what I said. The conversation was like this:
Person: Have you decided on a name yet?
Me: Not really but we both don't mind Alexander.
Person: Alexander?
Me: Yeah, why is there something wrong with it?
Person: Its a bit too Greek don't you think?
Me: Um, no. I like like Xander as a nickname though not Alex
Person: Xander sounds even more Greek, plus everyone would call him Alex anyway.
Me: Not if we introduce him as Xander.
Person: But its not even Australian.
Me: Neither is your name, my name is Greek too.

Just out of curiosity, is there such a thing as an Australian name (apart from possible Native names)?
No idea. Kylie? But thats Aboriginal I think.
Oh gosh no, it's far too common these days to be considered too Greek.
Hm, maybe it's not as popular in Australia as it is here. I know three Alexanders, one nicknamed Xander, and I've never heard anyone call it "too Greek." I think it's fine for any child. It a very strong, very old name and I love it.
Don't listen to them! Alexander is a great name, and well suited on any nationality.
I think it's fine :)
That's just ridiculous
Ditto.
What?!
That's garbage. My brother (I'm Australian) is Alexander (he's twenty-eight), and his nickname is Zand (same as Xand or Xander really). Additionally I have met several little boys named Xander in my travels through music / playgroups / dance / school.
If you were spelling is Aleksandr or something I'd say, hmm, maybe that's a bit awkward, but Alexander is a fine, handsome name for an Austalian!

Yeah exactly :)
I lived in Dulwich Hill in 04-05, during the soccer world cup that was between Greece and Portugal. Oh man, was it noisy!
I do rather miss my Greek butcher in Dulwich Hill hehe.

That's ridiculous. Alexander is universal. It's about as bad as my sister telling me Sophias / Sofias should have dark hair and eyes. Apparently, it never occurred to her that many Sophias / Sofias have light hair and eyes.
Besides, it's not like you're pairing Alexandros with a non-Greek surname. Even then, no one has the right to judge you.

Alexander is a universal name. It can be used anywhere. I love that name.
My all-time favorite boy's name (and the name of our first born). Not too Greek- a great name that works almost anywhere.
I have a Greek friend who thinks the nickname Xander is a bit silly because of the way it divides the elements in Alexander illogically, so hearing the idea that it is "too Greek" is really funny to me.
