My only association is the character of Aunt Mafalda (never-seen, I think, and referred to in tones of distaste) on Clarissa Explains It All.
I think it's pretty ugly, but then I think Matilda is, too. Both feel clunky and fusty. Out the two, I suppose I'd pick Mafalda, if only because it's at least more unusual. In either case I'd prefer the nickname Maud.
