Gertrude?
I really love the names Gertie and Trudy, but Gertrude isn't on my list of even *tolerable* names. Gertruda is only a little better. So what do you think of Gertrude and Gertruda? Am I letting first impressions steer me wrong? Thanks in advance!

I really like the name Getrude.

I agree, Gertrude just doesn't have a pleasing sound. I've known at leat two girls/women named just Trudy. I think the "ee" sound makes the name sound better. And Trudy could stand on its own, IMO.

I had a really nice teacher whose first name was Gertrude, so I kind of like it.
Gertrude in the French pronounciation is very pretty.

I'm sure I am alone in this, but I MUCH prefer Gertrude to Gertie or Trudy. I don't like either of those names, even as nns. Gertruda doesn't do anything for me either.
I had a neighbor growing up named Gertrude, which is probably why I like it. It is very harsh and old fashioned sounding, even today as older names make their come back. I personally would never use it, but I would love to hear it on a toddler! (Then again my favourite names at the moment are Millicent and Winifred, so maybe I just like names 99% of the population find unusable.)

One of my cats is named Gertrude, Gerta for short. I named her after a character in Gormenghast.Although I do have a soft spot for the name, I'm not sure I could see Gertrude on a human being. It's one of those names that's so widely despised by so many people that I think it would be difficult to bear. On the other hand, Trudy is a pretty nickname and does soften the name quite a bit. It also has a kind of retro feel to it that I really like.

Me (and apparently Array) might be the only people who like Gertrude nowadays. ;-)I admit Gertrude sounds a little harsh and heavy, but its heaviness is refreshing to me after all the light, frilly names out the there like Isabella, Sophia, Emily, etc. And your little Gertrude will certainly be more "unique" than another McNevaehlynleigh in the classroom!Gertruda softens the name a little, but not enough to ruin its unique hardness imo. I still like Gertrude better, but Gertruda just might grow on me a little more.

It's my mom's name. She hates it. She hates it so passionately I can't help but feel the same. She is mortified if anyone finds out that's her given name. The hatred is in my blood, and I can't help but hate it too. I do think Trudie is an adorable name for a young girl though.

WowI didn't know someone would hate their name that much. I won't tell her I know that, then. ;-)

LOL, she seriously gets mad if we tell anyone her legal documents say Gertrude and not just Trudy. Definitely don't tell her I spilled the secret. ;)

I think Gertrude is really nice. I think of the excellent Gertrude Stein; as long as you didn't name a sister Alice (Ms. Stein's life partner), you'd be good. :D Gertruda, I don't dig so much.If you like Trudy, I think it'd be fair to use it on its own.Array

Sorry if I am to be honest I cant stand Gertrude or Gertruda.

Does Trudy have to a be nn? I think that it can stand fine alone as it is. Even Gertie for that matter.
