Indira
I overheard someone talking about a little girl named Indira recently. At first, I thought I heard Adira, but after a few times, I'm pretty sure I heard Indira. I think it's a beautiful name with a great meaning, but I don't know if I would actually use it. Does it seem too hippie-ish for a girl or woman who isn't Indian?

I like it! I don't think I'd use it-- it seems overly sensual for some reason-- but I do think it's beautiful and has a great meaning.

Indira is utterly gorgeous and not difficult to pronounce. I think it's absolutely useable for any child. I'm married to a hippy so I'm biased. :-) But I would put it more in the column of "sophisticated" rather than "hippy." Finding a mn that compliments the exotic style of Indira, while still being anchored to reality might be tricky. I have that problem finding a mn for India. I fall back on French and Spanish names. Do you have anything in mind for Indira?

Okee dokee. :-)India Pascale and India Mirabel are my "go-to" combos for India. I can see Pascale working with Indira, but the "meer" sounds wouldn't work with Mirabel. So, let's see:Indira Pascale
Indira Celeste
Indira Sophie
Indira Niobe ("NIE-uh-bee" -- HBO "Rome" fans might get this one)
Indira Colombe
Indira Ines (I love the initials I.I.)
Indira Sonnet
Indira Gisele
Indira Leontine ("LAY-un-teen")
Indira Noemi
Indira Letitia
Indira Lily
Indira Lydia
Indira Thais ("THAY-iss?")
Indira Ione (not for the faint of heart)
Indira Lucienne
Indira Anais ("ah-nah-EES")
Indira Mavis
Indira Jade
Indira Pearl
Indira Victoria
Indira Phoebe
Indira Callista / Callisto

Fabulous: Indira Melisande. Indira Maeve and Indira Melusine are wonderful too. But Indira Melisande is in a category all by her gorgeous self.

Indira might sound strange on a girl who's not Indian, but I think it's pretty.

Indira is a beautiful name! I don't think it's hippie-ish at all, even for a non-Indian woman.

I love the name Indira! It's one of my all time faves. I would use it if my husband liked it. I always thought Indie would be a cute nn for it. I am not Indian BTW. I am not French, Irish, or Greek either, but I have names from all of those origins on my lists. I'm a "if I like it -- I'm going to use it" type of chic.

I think it's so pretty. But yeah, it'd probably be a little odd on someone who isn't Indian. That's not saying it's unusable, I'd just notice that's all. But, I mean, we've "stolen" names from every other culture. :o)

I like Indira very much. I don't think all Indiras have to be Indian. It might seem a little weird on a blonde girl though.
