Bird Names
Which are useable in your opinion, are their any you yourself are considering for a child, which bird names do you like purely for nn's, and what genders do you assign to which bird names?Peregrine, Eagle, Jay, Crow, Cardinal, Falcon, Hawk, Merlin, Kestrel, Heron, Sparrow, Raven, Halcyon, Lark, Wren, Nightingale, Dove, Swan, Lovebird, Parakeet, Parrot, Toucan, Turkey, Vulture, Starling, Kingfisher, Warbler, Goose, Penguin, Gyrfalcon, Duck, Hummingbird, Magpie, Pigeon, Swallow, and Chickadee. These are all the ones I could think of off the top of my head, any others you can think of?

I consider Peregrine, Sparrow, Lark, Wren, Nightingale, and Dove usable. Sparrow, Lark, Wren, Nightingale, and Dove are girl name, IMO, though Sparrow could possibly be used on a boy. Peregrine is pure boy to me. The other two bird names I have considered using (though probably only in the middle) are Bluebird and Meadowlark, again on girls. ETA: I didn't notice Robin on there. If I think about it as a bird name, then I would consider it unisex. In practice, however, I think popularity statistics would show this usage as girl only. In actuality, I really only think of Robin as a man's name. :)

I like Lark and Wren as firsts or middles for girls and Dove, Sparrow, Magpie, Nightingale, Meadowlark, Skylark as middles only.Robin and Jay are unisex to me as either firsts or middles, Starling is unisex as a middle.Peregrine and Drake are masculine to me and work as either, Falcon, Hawk, Kestrel, Heron only for middles. Swift is my favorite masculine bird name, but only as a middle.Ibis just came to mind and feels more masculine to me, I think.

I consider these male:
Peregrine
Jay
Hawk- I mainly see it as a surname though
Merlin- I see the wizard before I see a bird though.I consider these female:
Kestrel- It's intriguing.
Sparrow
Raven- I like Raven and also Ravenna.
Halcyon
Wren- Especially like it as a middle name.
Nightingale- Very GP.
Dove
Swan- I can't really see this working as a first name. Maybe a middle.
Hummingbird- this is really a nickname though, I couldn't take it seriously as a first name
Magpie- another nickname
Chickadee- nicknameI consider these unisex:
Lark- I prefer it for a girl but can see it on a boy. I've been liking it lately.
Starling- It's really a surname to meI don't consider these names/would not use them:
Crow- A surname
Cardinal
Falcon- I can almost see it as a name
Eagle, Heron, Lovebird, Parakeet, Parrot, Toucan, Turkey, Vulture, Kingfisher, Warbler, Goose, Penguin, Duck, Pigeon- all too literal or unappealing in sound
Gyrfalcon- Looks like a combo of Griffin and Falcon. Not digging it.
Swallow- Also a verb, so a no-go. Another one I like that you didn't mention is Mavis. Digging that one lately. I also like Linnet.

When I was about twelve I hoped one day to have twin daughters named Raven and Robin. I think they're far too similar now, but back then I like matching names for siblings. I still like Raven and Robin even though I wouldn't use them. I don't really like Robyn. I also like Jay and Lark. Merlin is nice but I only think of the wizard. I have a friend named Merel, I think it's the Dutch word for a certain kind of bird but I always forget which one.

Linnet is lovely. It makes me think of the Sweeney Todd song Green Finch and Linnet Bird, basically the only sane song in the entire musical.

Cormorant (m) (EDIT: Zipporah)I wouldn't use Cormorant, but then again, wouldn't use Parakeet, Toucan, Vulture (ugh), Magpie, Parrot, or Warbler. Not Duck or Goose either. However, I would use Peregrine on either gender. Gyrfalcon, Kingfisher, Eagle, Falcon, Hawk, and Merlin on a boy. Lark, Wren, Dove, Kestrel, Sparrow, and Starling on a girl. I would use Nightingale as a girl's middle name, purely for honoring Florence Nightingale, who is a huge heroine of mine. Also, does Zipporah count? It means bird. If so, definitely one of the loveliest bird names, imo. Zipporah Lark is one of my favorite combos.

Also....... I really like Robin on a boy. I used to (still do, come to think of it) love the story of Queen Elizabeth I and her sort of forbidden love for Robert, Earl of Leicester. She grew up calling him Robin - when she became Queen she had to call him Leicester or something like that, but when she git very emotional and needed a friend, not a courtier, she would call him Robin again. If I used Robin on a boy it wouldn't be short for Robert, but it wouldnt be after the bird necessarily.

Egret.I think that would make a cool name. We have a lot of them around here.I like Jay, Raven, Lark, Wren, Nightingale (MN), and Chickadee as a NN. They're all girls, in my mind.

I really adore egret and have had it on my top list before (for a girl). ATM I'm considering Annabeth eget as a combo. egretta is just as cool IMO, bonus points for making "Greta" a possibility

I'm just making certain you like Egret for a girl not a boy? Personally I can see it going either way.
