names on my mind
Names I'm thinking about.Emmanuel - I would use this if I didn't know a truly obnoxious one
Ira - love the meaning and sound.
Nathan - simple and unpretentious
Soren - cool and unexpectedJoan - I would happily use this. It's gorgeous, classic and I love Joan of Arc
Katarina - this is actually on our short list, along with Miriam and Margaret
Therese / Theresa - unexpected for an infant, great history, excellent namesakes
Theda - I have always loved this nameNote: besides Katarina none of these names are in the running. We've chosen Margaret, Miriam or Katarina for a girl, Thomas nn Tommy for a boy.

Emmanuel - This name is over the top in my opinion.
Ira - Love it.
Nathan - Traditional and classic but I don't care for it.
Soren - It's okay Joan - Love it. Joanie is adorable.
Katarina - Nice
Therese / Theresa - I like the nn Tessa but Theresa sounds dated.
Theda - I like it.

Emmanuel -It's way too beating-you-over-the-head-with-a-Bible religious. I'd expect an Emmanuel to have extremely devout Evangelical parents.
Ira -Not unless you're naming an 80-year-old.
Nathan -I love Nathan, though I do prefer Nathaniel.
Soren -I go back and forth on this one. Sometimes I really like it and other times all I hear is "sore".Joan -Crusty and ugly.
Katarina -LOVE.
Therese / Theresa -I have an irrational dislike for this family of names, but there's nothing wrong with them.
Theda -Sounds like someone falling down the stairs. I can't find any redeeming characteristics whatsoever. Sorry.

I like:Nathan
Joan
Therese/TheresaThe rest of the boys names aren't my taste. Katarina is perfectly nice, just not a name I'd consider myself. I've never really considered Theda before.

Emmanuel- Lewis. I love Emmanuelle for a girl, though, even if it is a little too cold.
Ira- I knew an Ira. He was a nice guy. It's a decent name.
Nathan- I love Nathan. People say it's too popular, but I don't care. I think it rocks.
Soren- Meh. It's kind of a goth-y name, at least with the people I know. I know a very goth couple who gave this name to their son.Joan- I like Joan, but I think a little girl/young woman should be Joanie. Staid, buttoned-up Joan can wait until she's in her fifties.
Katarina- I feel nothing for this name. It's okay, I guess. I love the NN Kat. More people should be named Kat, IMO.
Therese/Theresa: Theresa for a first name, Therese for a middle name, say I.
Theda- Bara. Vamp. Love it.

I wish I could talk Alexander into Nathan, I really dig it. I can see what you mean about Soren being gothy, it does have that feeling to it.We would actually call Katarina Kat. :-D Kit-Kat, knowing me. I've finally put my foot down to the no-nickname rule. When were talking about names I found Thomas / Miriam / Margaret so cold and I realized it was because I was used to nicknames. So Thomas will be Tom / Tommy, Margaret will be Meg and Miriam will occasionally be Mim. I'd prefer Miri, unfortunately that is a little close to my niece's name. (Mira.)

Who made the 'no-nickname' rule? You guys can call your kid whatever you want.ETA: Obviously this isn't my call, but I'm hoping you go with Miriam/Mim over Margaret/Meg. I think it's because it would be the third BtN baby named Margaret, and WE NEED SOMETHING NEW**. ;)**No offense to the other members, it's just that namenerds like reading/hearing about different BA's, ya know?

X isn't fond of nicknames. And I'm pretty sure we're going with Miriam. I'm not sure how often it's user Mim, though. I find it kinda of silly.

What about Miri? I know it's very close to Mira, but I think it's cute.

Ooo, I've been meaning to post about Theda because it's been on my mind lately too! I really love it. It's sort of dark an mysterious but friendly an approachable at the same time.Soren is ool.
emmanuel is nice but I hate the idea of it becoming "Manny."
Nathan is one of my favorite "classic/safe" names for a boy.
Joan is sweet though I think I like it better in the middle
Therese is gorgeous but Theresa strikes me as really dated
Katarina is too "sharp" an "prickly" for my tastes - it's very stern and cold in my mind

I quite like Emmanuel, but I also think it's a little too much. Over the top.
Ira doesn't sound like a name to me. And it does sound more feminine.
Nathan is simple I guess, but boring.
Soren...No. Not a fan. Hate it.Joan isn't my cup of tea. It feels oldish and I have troubles seeing it on a kid
I do find Katarina very boring and dated too. But that's probably because I live in Sweden. If I didn't have the associations I do with the name, I would probably have liked it. But I don't.
Theresa / Therese is one of those names I've always truly hated. I've only known ONE nice Therese, the others has been bitches. And I find the sound of it ugly. Theresa / Teresa is a bit better though. I'm liking it more now than I would have done a year ago.
Never heard Theda. Maybe it would get mixed up with Thea? Or even Leah? Not sure what I think of it. It could grow on me

Emmanuel seems weak to me, probably because of one I knew.
Ira - I love the meaning and sound too, but I wouldn't use it because it sounds really Jewish and I would feel weird about that (because I'm not Jewish).
Nathan seems super safe and normal, you can't go wrong with it, but it's a tad forgettable lately.
Soren... um, how are you saying it? Sur'n, or Sohr-en, or what. It's cool, yeah, but seems quite foreign.Joan is my MIL and I've never liked it. I just don't like the OAN. Groan moan ... it strikes me as really plain. Not ugly, but homely. I prefer Jean or Joanna.
Katarina - it seems sort of superficial to me, to use that and not Katherine, if you're not European. Only sort of. It's nice regardless. Also it's long. Katrina? Or would Katarina go by a familiar shorter form?
Theresa is alright. Very conservative and not imagey. A good name to bear. Therese seems less nicely formed and wants a French prn, for me.
Theda - geez, I like it too. It's sort of glammy, but I could get used to it on a real person. nn for Theodora.

I absolutely adore Joan! So stalwart and steadfast. I also like Emmanuel, Ira, Therese / Theresa (and Teresa), and Theda.

Emmanuel: Not a fan.
Ira: And his siblings PLO, Hezbollah and Hamas. Sorry, but the IRA looks just like it. I knew an Ira in school, he was a Junior and always went by J.R. I don't think we found out what his actual name was for years.
Nathan: Nice.
Soren: Sore.
Joan: Even duller than Jane.
Katarina: Very pretty.
Therese/Theresa: Therese doesn't sound pleasant, but Theresa is very nice.
Theda: Ugly sound, ugly look, an anagram of death.

Truthfully I really like all of these names, especially Ira, Soren, Therese / Theresa, Theda, and Miriam. I love Mim as a nn for Miriam and Tess as a nn for Therese / Theresa. Ira, Soren, and Theda do better without nn's.I do like Emmanuel, Nathan, Joan, Katarina, and Margaret. We have a good friend named Nathan and I have an aunt named Joan.Miriam is my favorite from your short list followed by Katarina and lastly Margaret, though I do adore some of the Margaret nn's like Meg, Maisie, May, and Greta. I also like Mags and Maggie, not to mention I'm probably forgetting some other great Margaret nn's. I'm not fond of Marge, Margie, and Margot.I've known quite well two very nice Margot's but I've never been fond of the name, it sounds so snooty to me even though the two Margot's I've known weren't snooty. I think its because I grew up watching Christmas Vacation and there is a terrible witchy-with-a-b snooty character in the movie named Margot who reminds me of our old next door neighbor Polly.I don't care for the nn Tom for Thomas but I actually like Tommy. I also like just plain Thomas a lot.
