Re: Why do people hate Mandy?
I don't like Amanda that much - prefer Miranda - but it totally outshines the drab and whiney Mandy. I knew a family with a tradition of A- names, and the only daughter was Amanda but she became Mandy within days, though her brothers Anthony and Angus have never been Tony or Gus. Which is odd.Perhaps there's just too big a gap between the firmly Latinate Amanda, with associations of exclusive schooling, and the firmly down-market Mandy? Or perhaps it's just that when Amanda was fashionable the miniskirt was at its height and all the Mandy people had bouffant hair, Cleopatra eye makeup, a penchant for pot and were never happier than when waving their knickers at the Beatles! But it goes further. In Private Lives, silly-little-second-wife Sybil meets her predecessor Amanda and tries to ingratiate herself: "I shall call you Mandy!", to which sleek, sophisticated Amanda drawls: "Yes, I suppose you will" in tones of resignation. And that was the early 30s, surely? As for naming my daughter Mandy ... well, DH's uncle by marriage had a nephew named Mandeville who was known as Mandy! He changed it to Carl as soon as he was legally able, and it had been a family name rather than a parental choice, but one did sympathise with the poor bloke.
