If you had to
choose one of the #1 names for girls in Italy in recent years, which one and why? Do you have a least favorite?
1999 and 2002: Martina
2000: Alessia
2001: Sara
2003 - 2009: Giulia
2010 - 2015: Sofia
Martina, Alessia, Sara, Giulia or Sofia?
The interesting thing is that Giulia was used much more often when it was at #1 than any of the other #1 names when they were at the top of the list.
For example in 2004 when Giulia was used most often in recent years it was given to over 12000 baby girls (over 4.5 percent). Alessia (maximum 3.6 percent) and Martina (maximum 3.5 percent) were only given to 9000 girls maximum in the years they were at #1. Sara was used 8000 times when it was number 1 (3.2 percent) and Sofia almost 9000 times (3.6 percent).
So Giulia was really incredibly common when it was at #1. The #1 name Emily in 2004 in the US (the year Giulia was at its most popular) was only given to 1.2 percent of newborn baby girls whereas Giulia was given to 4.5 percent.

I would go with Giulia. I think Julia is beautiful, and it's not much of a leap to go from that to Giulia.
Distant second for me would be Martina. I don't love it, but I like the nickname Marty.
Sofia and Alessia aren't for me. I can't put my finger on it but something about Sara just annoys me. I can't' explain it, it's just one of those things.

For me it's Martina, because of ist wonderfully old-fashioned 60/70's flair.

Alessia. I think it's very beautiful and isn't popular here at all.

I would say Alessia because it sounds pretty.
I really love both Sara and Giulia (preferably Julia). I wish they weren't so common! I think I would have to choose Giulia. I have met many more Sara(h)'s where I live (US) than I have Giulia's/Julia's. Plus, Giulia is such a pretty name!
