I pronounce it ES-ter, and of the three you mentioned, I like it best. It's lovely.

I certainly hope nobody says ES-ther, but in a world where the population, or most of it, of the USA pronounces Anthony with a th, who knows?I like Esther, then Irene (three syllables only, please) and in spite of my marvellous SIL and two good friends, I can't warm up to Elaine at all.

I like it a lot. I know a 23 year old Esther. I've only ever heard it said ES-ter (or ES-ta in some accents).

Hester is my favorite, I prefer Estella and Estelle to Esther,

Hi Foxgloves!!!Here in Italy we have the form Ester (EH-ster).
I agree with you: I've never heard the th sound in Esther neither by an English-speaker person. Among these three my pick will be Irene (ee-RE-ne).
I like Esther but I prefer Ester.

I am trying to pronounce it with a -th- sound and it sounds really strange and lispy. It's EST-her, not ESTH-er and the h sound is pretty much dropped. My second cousin is named Esther, she'll be six in a couple months, so people use it. They're Jewish though, and all three kids have very Jewish names. I really like it, it's my favorite of the three names you posted.

i thought it was just me personally having trouble with "th" sounds. ty for the explanation.

I agree I've never heard Esther pronounced phonetically before, at least not in the United States. In terms of the three names you listed, I prefer Elaine! It's the least old lady-ish of the three to me.
