Australia newspaper names
So, every year I buy one newspaper. It's the issue with all of the children starting school in the area (the school year starts in January/February in Australia). I buy it for sentimental reasons as I work in child care and looked after some of these kids. The paper also prints the names of all of the children in each class. This year, I decided to tally all of the names from the 92 schools- 4090 children, all of whom are 5 or turning 5 shortly. Here are the most common names. I counted the different spellings but, for simplicity, I didn't include them here:Ruby = 40 kids (that's 1% of the total of children)
Jackson = 40 (also 1%)

Not surprised about any of the top names.Very surprised by the bottom names! If I was looking at that list I would have thought american!

1. Surprised to see -ayden names outside of North America, especially so many of them! They seem so American / Canadian to me.2. It’s at least encouraging to see Jackson spelled correctly. I don’t know what is with the trend to add X and Z. Of course you combined the spellings so who’s to say people aren’t using those variants. 3. I wonder what the origin of Teiwamarama is. Is it from an indigenous Australian language?4. It always bothers me to see beautiful, meaningful names respelled, especially when they are word names. Patience is an actual word and has been traditionally used as a virtue name. Spelling it Paychence robs it of that linguistic connection and makes it look mangled.

The "-ayden" craze went wild over here and extended to "-len"s and "-gen"s.Teiwamarama and other names like it on the full list are most likely Maori or Islander (Samoan, Tongan, etc). It's not an area with a very big Aboriginal population, plus Aboriginal names tend to be shorter than that and somewhat harsher, eg. Jarrah and Kirily.

Thanks for the info, especially on the Maori / Islander names. Really appreciate it!It’s unfortunate that bad American name trends catch on there as well. Would love to go back to 1980 when -ayden names were as rare as snow in Alice Springs.

Thanks for this list! A few things stood out:-It is surprising to see Lincoln used so much outside the US. The significance here is the association with the president who got us through the Civil War. In Australia is it just for the sound?-How long has Game of Thrones been on the air? Has it really been more than 5 years? It must be to explain the Khaleesis here.

I think Lincoln is just for the sound. Personally, I've liked it ever since Prison Break first aired =)

Game of Thrones has been on since 2011.

Wow, just another sign I’m getting old. I still think of it as a “new show!”
