Re: -ian names
I'd use Ian definitely and Adrian probably. I'm also mildly fond of Julian and Sebastian, and I once knew a gorgeous preschooler with blond curls named Dorian - his brothers were Ashley and Mark.
A friend named her son Matthew Florian for ancestral reasons; she says he loves his mn.
I don't think Vivian would be particularly usable, and anyway I prefer Vivien for a girl. I much prefer Marianne to Marian, and Lucienne to Lucian.
I would definitely avoid Cyprian, Caspian, Hadrian in spite of his Wall, Vespasian and especially Finnian and Ninian, neither of which I can take seriously, though I've tried.
ETA: What about Gillian?
