It's dated and a bit on the plain side but otherwise fine.
I like Roy Thomas the most from your list. I think it has the best flow.

Not a fan of Roy. It feels dated, but lacking the charm that can come with it. My closest comparison is Travis, that too also feels dated without the charm. I like Roy Gilbert the most out of your list. Gilbert happens to have that "charm" I mention, though I'd never use it. It's fun to say, especially as a combo like "Roy Gilbert"

I think the reason it is unpopular is that it feels a little redneck.I don't hate it. I like its portrayal here as a handsome name. I like Roy William and Roy Gilbert the best. All decent combos.

My BIL was named Roy by his Scottish mother, mn Fraser from his father's family. I love the name and the combo, but then I love my BIL and I can't remember what I thought of the name before I knew him.ETA it's much, much better than Ray.
