I love Gareth and Wolfgang, I like Colin, Derek, Tyrone, Sameer and Roger, I'm neutral towards Steve and Craig and I dislike Phil.
Craig and Roger, I do not care for. I like Phil and Tyrone.
Tyrone makes me think of the actor, Tyrone Power. I've always liked the name. Tyrone is an Irish name. Tyrone Power was one of the great romantic swashbuckling stars of the mid-twentieth century, and the third Tyrone Power of four in a famed acting dynasty reaching back to the eighteenth century. His great-grandfather was the first Tyrone Power (1795-1841), a famed Irish comedian. His father, known to historians as Tyrone Power Sr., but to his contemporaries as either Tyrone Power or Tyrone Power the Younger, was a huge star in the theater (and later in films) in both classical and modern roles. His mother, Helen Emma "Patia" (née Reaume), (Mrs. Tyrone Power), was also a Shakespearean actress as well as a respected dramatic coach.

If Steve were Stephen, or even Steven, I'd thoroughly enjoy the first five. OK, probably not Craig IRL. Roger and Philip, though not Phil, would also make my list. Tyrone, Wolfgang and, especially, Sameer (like something you'd spread on bread) are unacceptable, though Wolfgang in a German context is fine.
I don't love the nickname Steve, but I am struck by the general feeling towards Stephen. Until I took down the option for people to vote on my list (a feature I find somewhere between annoying and creepy), Stephen was the name on my PNL that was the lowest-rated - I think it was just rated around a 1. I like the name Stephen (that spelling). Most of these others seem fairly inoffensive, if not favorites of mine. Colin, Craig, Derek, and Roger are all fine, if dated. Philip is fine, though like Steve, I dislike the nickname Phil for it. No real feelings on Gareth or Tyrone.Wolfgang is not a favorite, and I've never encountered Sameer. It does feel a bit odd to suggest that any name is the "least popular" - by what metric is that measured?
According to Just Jonquil, the list appeared in the Daily Mail! In which case, it was probably invented by the telephonist to fill a page.
...makes sense. This seems to be a list of personal tastes and peccadillos versus something meaningfully tabulated (how would you even do that?).
Oh I love Wolfgang! I used to have a German neighbour named this and I thought it was really neat to hear used. I don't really care for the others.
I like Stephen better than Steven but Steve could be a nn for either. Handsome name imho. Timeless -- or should be! Philip is nice but Phil debases it. I notice that the same press article (Daily Mail) lists the following as other examples of the downward trend: Nigel, Melvyn, Norman, Rodney, Trevor, Horace. I quite like Nigel ... but Horace is a horror! Apparently Bodhi is one of the "in" names. Ghastly! I love tradition!
I like...Colin
Craig
Derek
Gareth
Tyrone
Wolfgang
I had no idea Colin fell off the top 1000, I thought it was still widely popular 😮I guess it's become dated like the rest of them..
Was Wolfgang ever popular to begin with there?? I don't remember an era where there was a surplus of British Wolfgangs.
It should, that name goes hard. It's so metal.
Yes, Wolfgang is super cool! I'd love to meet a Wolfgang.
Any particular reason why these names are so unpopular?Steve: Well, in the US, Steve is nearly always short for Steven, which isn't as popular as it was a couple generations back but you do still see young Stevens.
Colin: This still seems modestly popular.
Craig: Mayb not as popular as it was when I was a kid, but I wouldn't call it unpopular or disliked.
Derek: This was definitely popular back in the eighties but seems to have fallen way off.
Gareth: Never got much use here.
Tyrone: Was so popular on black guys in the 70s that it's actually become a cliche Black Guy Name. Fell out of style very quickly.
Phil: Same deal as with Steve.
Wolfgang: Not sure it ever got much use here.
Sameer: Ditto this. It sounds too much like smear.
Roger: Very much a mid-20th century name. It was out of style by the time I was born. I only knew one my own age, and he was a Junior and went by RJ. Heck, I think his dad went by some other name.

I'm coming from the US, so a little different. Overall, these feel like middle-aged+ names these days.I know a Derek in his 40s, I know a Roger who's in his 60s, etc. Usually I'd expect Steve to just be short for Steven / Stephen. Colin still feels pretty fresh, I feel like Wolfgang is up for a trendy revival in the States, and I wouldn't be surprised to meet a young Tyrone, personally.
These seems like pretty standard names... I'm surprised they're unpopular.
I like Wolfgang in theory but it's probably a difficult name to live with. The others are not my style but they don't seem that bad to me. Colin has been in the top 100 in Sweden since 2013 for some reason that I just can't understand. I think it's quite ugly and also very British so it's kind of weird in a Nordic setting. I always think of Colin Firth, which is not a bad association but I wouldn't name my child after him.
