Meaning & History
In Greek mythology Aethusa is the daughter of Poseidon and Alcyone, and lover of Apollo with whom she had Eleuther. Aithusa is a white dragon summoned by Merlin in the BBC television series Merlin. On the show the name is said to mean "light of the sun" in Ancient Greek, but this is incorrect. Aithusa, or Aethusa (Αἵθουσα), is the name of a portico or verandah built with an open ceiling in order to bring in light (as in open to Apollo, as Aethusa was). The writers of the show may have confused the purpose of an aethusa to be its meaning.
