Meaning & History

Latinized form of Greek Δίρκη (Dirke), possibly meaning "cleft, broken in two". In Greek mythology Dirce was the wife of the Theban king Lycus. Because she mistreated her niece Antiope, she was killed by Antiope's two sons, who had her torn apart by a bull.
