Also of English usage albeit more often used in English-speaking African countries like Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania and South Africa. So I suggest that the usage "English (African)" should be added. [noted -ed]

Only works if you’re Amish.
Ugh, I hate it. Not a good name for Americans, it has "dork" in it. Kids are mean, they still use "dork" believe it or not. Try Doris.
LOL! Dorcas means gazelle, and Amelia means leopard! Leopards hunt Gazelles!
Just a really dumb dorky name!
Dorcas Lane is one of the main characters on the British historical drama series "Lark Rise to Candleford". She runs the post office in a small English town in the late 1800's.
Kind of Roman masculine style.
Hideous. Not even good as a middle name.
Dorcas is a fictional character in the TV series: 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' (2018-). She is one of the Weird Sisters along with Prudence and Agatha. Dorcas is played by actress Abigail Cowen.
As someone with the name Dorcas, I must admit it presented challenges as a child. Once you grow into it, you realize it's unique and strong and well storied. I have learned to love and treasure it. Having had the pleasure of meeting two other women that share my name, I've realized we are all badasses. Likely not a coincidence.
I feel pretty bad for anyone with this name. It sounds like an insult (Dork-is). I actually really like the name Tabitha, and if you are named this just go by Dory (or something else).
I find this name horrible because I always associated dork or dorkus as a mean term to call someone who was stupid, so its hard for me to look at this name and not cringe a little. Sorry to all the Dorcas' out there, I'm sure you are not stupid.
What happened to Dorcas? I put poison in his mutton.
In all seriousness, this was used in Fire Emblem 7 for a minor character that uses an axe.
Dorcas is the prettiest name I've never seen before. It is a nice name in the world it has few people named with it, and also it sounds great. In fact I like to pronounce it everytime.Everyone name your baby 'Dorcas' then you'll see how smart and talented she will be to make things happen in this world, that's how most of Dorcas are, including me. My name is 'DoRcas' and I've never been picked on or teased. I am respectable.
I know a twenty-something Dorcas. I wonder how she felt about her name as a kid, being surrounded by Ashley's and Brittney's. Definitely not a name you hear often!
I like the meaning and the name is pretty, but I'd never use it as a first name in my country. A woman I know has a sister-in-law named Dorcas, but at least she lives in Bosnia, hopefully dork isn't a word over there.
I had previously not been aware of the name Dorcas. All my life I've felt as if I had no real purpose on this planet. Just drifting from one day to another without a magnum opus to call my own. Upon learning of the biblical story of Dorcas, and her glorious existence, I have found a reason to continue: I must punch all the Dorcases!Never before have I been so irrationally infuriated by such a simple thing. However the name Dorcas causes my blood to boil, and nothing would make me happier than to punch every single Dorcas in existance. Or at least their parents. Seriously what are you thinking? "But it's a biblical name, stop punching me" you say. You know what other names were in the Bible? Hitler, Mao Zedong, Stalin, and Randy. All of these names are bad. But Dorcas is worst of all.
That name is so sexy.
Yeah I'm kind of put off by this. It looks like a man's name, and the pronunciation sounds like "dork-kiss"... Unless I'm saying it wrong.
Dorcas is one of the names listed by the character Bert in his song, "Jolly Holiday" in the movie MARY POPPINS.
The name of a shepherdess in Shakespeare's play The Winter's Tale. I have to play her in a performance I am in, though I am not a huge fan of the name. It has a nice meaning, however, I'll give you that.
I like this name. I didn't at first, but it has grown on me. If there was a bullying problem, slightly possible nicknames could be Dora, Cas, or Cassie.
I used to read a book series by Nancy N. Rue called The Salem Years, really awesome series. There was a baby in it named Dorcas. And to the anonymous commenter: home schoolers are not home prisoners, that's a very common misconception. :)
I personally see nothing wrong with the name Dorcas. Dorcas is the same name as Tabitha. The Greek form of Tabitha is as follows: ταβιθαThis is the same name as Dorcas. The Greek form of Dorcas is as follows: δορκαςBoth names mean gazelle, which is sometimes called a roe deer. This is a small red deer which lives in the Holy Land. There is a gazelle known as the Dorcas gazelle which was named after the Disciple Dorcas or Tabitha, who is mentioned in Acts 9.The Hebrew word for Gazelle is as follows: עופר
Dorcas is my name. For all of the negative comments, I have never been teased, nor was I homeschooled. If you as a person would tease someone because of their name, that is a problem with you and not with me or my name. The name Dorcas is associated with doing charitable works. Also at least it is a name unlike many so called names that people have today.
Hahahaha! This is actually a name?
I think that the name "Dorcas" is very nice and unique! The only reason why some people relate it to "dork" is because they don't know how to pronounce it and mispronounce. It's pronounced as "DoR-cas"(notice the emphasis on the "r"), not "dorc/k-cas". If you pronounced it properly, there won't be any relation to the word "dork". The name is nice and unique! Don't ruin it just because of misproununciation! I like the name Dorcas a lot.
I use the word dorkus all the time. I never in my life thought it was actually a name that sounded exactly the same?
Actually, I don't find the sound of the name pleasant at all. If you think this name sounds nice, you might consider Doris and Dora, which are prettier, and don't have the 'dork' association.
Not to be mean, but I pity any poor kid with this name.
I don't think what it sounds like should stand in the way. This is a beautiful name, and if it didn't remind me of dork, then the next thing it reminds me of is of sugar. And I don't think the nickname dorkette is good either, actually I think it's worse, like a very feminine dork.
A note to all: Do not name anyone this. It is likely they will get teased. Even if they don't, it could REALLY ruin their reputation. Seriously. :P
All I can say is, be prepared to homeschool your child if you choose this name.
Whenever I tell someone I like this name. I get the strangest look. LOL But I do like it and I believe anyone who has this name has been teased to death.
I like this name. The only problem with it is what it sounds like. *Sigh* a waste of a good name.
Dorcas was a character in the book Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes.
DON'T name your child this. They will be teased for their whole life. I think it is absolutely disgusting.
This name is FUNKY. Don't let the bullies get their own way. It shouldn't hinder what you think of this name. I think it's really cool and it should make a come-back.
This name makes me giggle. One of the most popular girls at my mother's school was named Dorcas, even though I find the name quite dorky.
Literary: I can't for the life of me remember the name of the book, but the main character's big brother was always calling her Dorcas and she hated it until she found out that he called her that because of her beautiful brown eyes. If someone was to name their daughter Dorcas, they could always call her Dorry/Dori. Mean kids will find a way to pick on someone regardless of their name.
An okay name, but I'd prefer Dorkella or Dorkette.
I think this is a pretty bad name. It sounds too much like "dork-ass" and why would you want people calling your kid that? People try to give their children weird, 'unique' names and don't even think about the consequences.
I think this name is terrible and thankfully I've never met anyone with the name. It sounds like dork, and you would be teased A LOT. So don't name your kid this.
Dorcas Meadowes in Harry Potter. We don't see her, but Mad-Eye Moody said to Harry that Voldemort probably killed her himself. (Which leaves suspicions. Normally, Voldemort lets his servants kill the ennemies. dum dum dummmm)
I really like this name. A shame it would be associated with dork. I'd recommend it as a middle name. *sigh*
I agree with the last comment; it's too pretty to scorn or toss over your shoulder, but many people do. This is a somewhat unusual name, so if you are looking for a rarely-used name, try Dorcas.
Dorcas Gailen is Julie Newmar's character in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers".
Please, no one name your child this unless you intend on home schooling them. It will be associated with dork which means both geek and a whale's you know...
During the Salem Witchcraft Trials, 5-year-old Dorcas Goode was hung for witchcraft. I DO like the name, sorry if that's put anyone off it.
Dorcas Goode was indeed accused of witchcraft and sent to prison but she wasn't hung. They released her after a year, but by then she had gone insane.
Her name was actually Dorothy Good. From Wikipedia: 'Good's first name was incorrectly written as "Dorcas" by Magistrate John Hathorne on the warrant for her arrest dated March 23, 1692, but was correctly called "Dorothy" everywhere else in the legal records.'
Dorcas is a character in one of the Fire Emblem video game series. A very unfortunate sounding name if you ask me.
