Meaning & History

Derived from Hebrew חֵילָם (Helam), which is the name of a biblical town where king David and his army fought and won a battle against the army of the Syrian king Hadadezer. The town's name is said to mean either "stronghold, fortress" or "place of abundance" in Hebrew and is also found spelled as Chelam, Cheleam and Cheylam. In the Book of Mormon, convert from the people of Noah (c. 147 BC). First of those baptized by Alma.

A known bearer of this name is Helam Marinho Zampier, the father of the Brazilian soccer player Neto (b. 1985), whose full name is Hélio Hermito Zampier Neto.
