Meaning uncertain, possibly derived from the Arabic root ه و د (h-w-d) related to returning or ه د ي (h-d-y) related to guidance. In Islamic tradition this is the name of an ancient Arabian prophet who is commonly identified as the biblical figure Eber. The 11th chapter of the Quran, surah Hud, is named after him.
