Melanie is easy to pronounce and a really pretty name. I really love this name.
Melanie is a gorgeous name! Not overused and classy!
Melanie is a super cute name!
I think Melanie is a gorgeous name; Mel would be a cute nickname.
My bestie is named this and it's superduper pretty!🫢🫢🫢😽.
I’ve always liked the name Melanie. It’s so bright and happy, all while not being too common; it’s never been overused. I think that Melanie is a 10/10 girl name, suitable for any girl.
Very VERY pretty. Reminds me of Melanie Martinez, a very successful, singer, actor and director of her own movie K-12.
Gorgeous name, when I hear it I think of Melanie Martinez, one of my favorite singers.
I don’t think of Melons when I hear it. I associate it with Melanie Martinez! Pretty name.
I think it's so pretty, kind and sweet. I love it. :D.
Pretty!
Such a pretty name. It can fit girls with any personality.
Dislike. It sounds very middle-aged and like you are saying Melon-y when you say it, which is just dumb.
Endearing and cutesy. I love it!
I just think of my favourite song artist, Melanie Martinez!
Reminds me of a melon.
My aunt, my school (that I graduated from) counselor, and Melanie Lynskey make me like this name. If my aunt didn't have this name, I would rename myself this.
Sounds really soft, I don't know, there is really no strong sound, like not serious or something. One of my least favorite names. Just boring.
So cute. Melanie has always reminded me of lemonade for some reason.
So plain and dated!
My name is Melanie, but I have a TON of nicknames. Although I am dark skinned and have black hair, my mother named me this because I looked like I would have a dark personality.
Love it! It’s a cute name without being too frilly or pompous. It can imagine this on any age. I like Mel, Laine, Lanie, Mela, or Lena as nicknames. Very nice!
Where did you get Lena as a nickname for Melanie? It is anie not enie. I don't get it.
I like Melanie. Very cute. I do not think it is youthful, I only think people think it is youthful because of Melanie Martinez and her songs being childish in a way. Melanie is just beautiful and gorgeous. It's a cute name for girls. I like it a lot! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.
Very pretty name.
I only know black girls with this name. They are all really nice but the definition of black/dark doesn’t make sense. For example I wouldn’t call my kid white.
A pretty name. I like that it's not overused. And, to the poster below, I'd like to point out that this website isn't a forum for crappy creative writing and/or random, long-winded musings about hypothetical people. Just saying.
I really like this name. I prefer Melania a little bit more, but Melanie has a lot of charm. I also like the nickname Mel, but I think Melanie as a full name sounds much better, Mel is a bit like a filler and too short for me to be used like all the time. It does have the watermelon associationn for me, and it was like my main association when I was a kid, I would always make fun of this name because it sounded so much like a melon, but I do like it a lot anyways now. My other association is the singer Melanie C. Whom I kinda liked as a small child. And my synaesthetic association - I am an auditory-tactile and auditory-taste synaesthete - is very cool, because it's ice cream. Anything cold and smooth and icy really and the sweet taste but ice cream feel the most like this name. When I think about this name I see a woman in her mid 30's maybe, with black, or dark brown, or chestnut hair, very thick and smooth hair and fairly long, and with dark, like maybe black, or dark brown, or hazel, or something like this, eyes. Her complexion is olive. She's medium-height and perhaps a little fluffy, but not really overweight and you wouldn't call her fat. She likes to wear make up and usually does, and is really good at it. She wants to always look pretty but even without her cosmetics she's a very attractive woman, and, albeit not frilly or overly delicate, she's very feminine and usually attracts a lot of positive attention. She knows how to dress smartly and elegantly, but comfortably and approachably at the same time. She likes high-heel shoes and dresses, and a lot of lively colours, but she also wears more laid back things, and more toned colours, and feels just as well this way. She is very active, energetic, optimistic, smiling and just an approachable person. I imagine her working at some important and pretty high position, and she is very professional, but also deeply humane and tuned in to help people if she can. She is a great comforter and listener, though she's not the one who will always just listen and commiserate quietly, she's very chatty and likes to talk about her own life too, and is rather the kind of person who will give you a piece of practical advice, rather than just sit there with you and be empathetic. Some might like it, some will regard it as meddling into others' business, but her intentions are always good. She is spontaneous and slightly impulsive, but when necessary, she can stay very calm. She likes to have fun, and knows how to do it. She likes good music and a party, she's always a young girl at heart, though sometimes that young girl becomes suppressed by all the responsibilities she has, and her perfectionism. Melanie is very caring for others, but very demanding for herself, always lives in a hurry. She has a strong personality, but is also very sensitive and emotional. I imagine her as a mum, with a couple of children, to whom she's very dedicated, she generally gets on well with children and is a great caretaker. She's very engaged in her children's life and they have a very important place in her heart. If not that she's a very rational and smart person, she'd probably be very overprotective and possessive of them. She has especially good relationships with her daughters. Everything bad that happens in her life, she just treats as a challenge and tries not to worry too much. Her enthusiasm and optimism are infectious. She's very independent, doesn't like to ask for help, and values her freedom above all else. She has a very loving and altruistic heart. Her views are rather liberal, she's very open-minded, likes change and novelty. That's just what I see when I think of this name, not how I think all Melanies are/should be like, I know only one Melanie and I suppose she could fit only maybe like half of this description.
Melanie et Melania sont les mΓͺmes, on peut dire que les Melanie sont des filles ou femmes rares parce qu'elles sont belles, inteligente, mignone, sociable, souriante.[trans: Melanie and Melania are the same, It can be said that Melanie are girls or women rare because they are beautiful, intelligent, cute, sociable, smiling.]
A bit too natural and watery, obviously like melon, but still quite nice and pretty.
My name is Melanie. No one knows how to pronounce it, let alone spell it correctly. I never liked it, detested Mel. The only other Melanie's have been fair skinned wimpy girls. I am not, so in that way it fits. I have always thought I should have been named Scarlett.
I am a Melanie, my mother loved French names, and my father also liked an M name. My parents were Catholic, and there was a statue of St. Melanie at their church, I was born in the 1980's so my mother also loved Melanie Safka the folk singer. I have grown to love my name, feminine yet strong. I am not dark skinned, but I do love the chic, sophisticated style of black suits, dresses, bags and coats. Also, the only people who have ever called me Mel are members of my immediate family, I introduce myself as Melanie, my teachers always called me Melanie, and I only introduce myself as Melanie. If someone tries to "Mel" me, I make sure to sign all communication with my full proper name, or I don't respond when being called. I will always say, "I thought you meant somebody else." People catch on quick. This is a name for a strong girl/person, professional, with a very gentle/kind undertone. Guys in college always said it was a sexy name, but I wouldn't rely on that data. Hope this helps.
I love this name. Primarily because I know a girl at my school named Melanie (she's a Latina by the way), and it sounds aesthetically pretty. I also like it because of American singer Melanie Martinez.
It's a fine enough name, though I prefer the similar sounding name of Melody.
I used to love this name when I was little, but I think I was majorly turned off when Melanie Martinez started becoming popular.
This is my name. I used to not appreciate it very much. I didn't like being called Mel, and everyone calls me Mel. However, as I grew into my mid 20's it started growing on me. The more and more I thought about it, I realized it sounded pretty and strong. Even Mel sounds very strong, like I command presence when people call me that. So for any Melanies that don't like their name, give it a chance, it may grow on you!
My name is Melanie, and I like my name. I'm a very caring person and I love helping people. I'm in college right now studying Behavioral Science and Psychology. I'm not really girly. I'm mostly a tomboy because I have 3 brothers and no sisters. I don't dress like a boy though lol, I wear casual girl clothes, jeans and a blouse. But anyways, I always wondered what my name meant and now that I know, I think it's pretty nice. It definitely fits my personality. I'm trustworthy, loyal, understanding, a goofball but can be serious at times. I would totally recommend the name Melanie.
I think it's very boring, to be honest. I don't hate it, but I don't see the appeal, either.
A name doesn't define a person. Just because a name makes it seem like someone should act one way doesn't mean they will. Melanie is a bit girly, but that doesn't mean the owner of the name is going to be girly. To all you people getting this image in your head of what they look and act like are just plain stupid. Stop trying to fit people in a little box and just let them be them.
It sounds very 'wet-lettacey' (my way of saying wimpy, or weak) no offense to anyone called Melanie, this is just my opinion.
I really dislike this name. I've had a friend named Melanie since I was a little kid, and she's a very sweet girl, but I've always found her annoying and ugly... no offense to any Melanie's out there, just my opinion. -_-
I named my baby girl Melanie Lynne. I think it's a good name for a little kid that would also age well. I like that it's familiar but not overused. Makes me think of a sunny, sweet girl. I love the nickname Lanie as well :)
I one hundred percent disagree with you people that hate this name. This name sounds like a hard, smart and funny girl. Although it means dark, I can't help but imagine an eight or nine year old eating a piece of watermelon!
I absolutely DETEST this name!
It sounds soppy, wet at 100% Sissy!
Melanie is up with the other names I hate:
Melissa, Janet, Joan, Lily, Martine/a and Laura.Very sorry to people who are named any of them, it is just my opinion.
@Rosalba I 100% agree (though I like Joan). Glad to know I'm not the only one who hates this name. It's just too frilly.
The name Melanie is stunning and elegant! I just ADORE the sound of this name! It's so darling! Xx ^_^ A good name for a sibling of Melanie is the cute, girly name Melody. :D.
This name is just SO cute and beautiful! It's a little common but I don't care. I just really like this name.
Although Mel or Mellie are common nicknames for Melanie, I was always nicknamed Lanie pronounced LAY-NIE.
I love this name! The only misgiving I have with it is that it could easily lead to mocking nicknames - "Smelly Melly" or "SMELL-anie."
This name reminds me of summer and happy girls, I really like it.
Melanie is my name. I like it because its solid and not too popular. Better than Melissa I feel.
Melanie is a very good name choice. You can't go wrong with it. It isn't overly popular which is good, but it isn't unheard of either.10 out of 10 from me!
I like the name Melanie because of its meaning (dark/black) and the delicate but melodious way it rolls off the tongue. I would like to add it to my list but I feel like it's too common a name. :s
I love this name, I think it looks and sounds beautiful.
As I was reading through the comments I thought, 'That's funny if I ever have a baby girl I would call her Melanie Rose!' and, 'Yes I agree that mel isn't the most amazing nickname, and you couldn't shorten it to nie, but if it really bothered you, you could always shorten it to Annie.'
This is my name and I've never liked it. First of all, it seems as though most people don't consider the meaning of the name when choosing it for their child. The name means "dark"... why is it that any Melanie's I meet are bubbly blondes? And secondly, I LOATHE the nickname "Mel". It's a boy's name and instead of rolling off the tongue (as a name should-in my opinion) it just kinda comes out the mouth and falls flat.
What an awesome name! It is a very strong, solid professional name for a girl.
This name makes me think of a sly, tall gorgeous intelligent brunette girl! It is mature yet modern, it is like the new Catherine! :D
So pretty =D
Beautiful! A delicate name, yet so strong at the same time! Love it! (:
When I hear this name I picture the most beautiful girl in the room. Melanies are usually very pretty.
This name makes me think of a girl who is serious and generous with inner strength. It's a very good name in my opinion. It also helps I've only ever met one person names Melanie.
There's only one word that comes to mind when I hear this name: BEAUTIFUL.
One of the cutest girl names EVER! LOVE IT!
I love this name! It is really pretty. This name makes me think of a lovely girl with dark hair blowing in the wind. I also really liked Melanie from Gone with the Wind.
I personally prefer the sound of meh-LAHN-ie to mel-AH-nie. The second is a bit childish, while the first can be youthful, but it can also be older.
I quite like the name Melanie, it's pretty. My mother was called Melanie Christina, and she hated it, and would ignore anyone who called her Melanie, so everyone called her Tina. I wouldn't name any of my children Melanie though, as a middle name, due to the fact that my mother hated it, I'd use Christina or Tina as the middle name.
I love the name Melanie because of the Gone With The Wind Character, and also a really cool friend of mine. I am struck by the irony of the fact that as I type this I'm watching the scene in The Outsiders movie where Ponyboy reads from the book.
In terms of Melanie nicknames, Mel has gotten a bit too prevalent. I'm in favor of bringing back Melly, a la Melanie Hamilton Wilkes.
Melanie is an awesome name for a girl, I love it.
Such a lovely name, I just love it!
I have always liked the sound of this name. It is feminine but not weak. It is pretty. Not overly used or fadish either.
This name is very beautiful. It's very gentle and laid-back, in my opinion.
My name is actually Melanie. My mother actually named me for Scarlett's "friend" Melanie (Melanie was really Scarlett's cousin I think) and I am from the south (North Carolina to be exact). How's that for irony? But as far as the name references to other people in history, my middle name is Renee, which usually means born again. Go figure.
