Meaning & History

Derived from Nahuatl nezahualli "fasting", probably referring to a collar made out of bands of paper twisted together that was worn to show the wearer should not be offered food, and pilli "person of noble lineage; child". This was the name of a 15th century ruler of Texcoco, whose name could be interpreted as "child of Nezahualcoyotl".
