This name is sweet, but I couldn't picture it on an adult.
Like the name but it sounds like one of those names that were traditionally boy names (it isn’t).
Piper McLean from The Heroes of Olympus. She is a very strong and passionate character. Has a power to "charmspeak" (which means she has very powerful and convincing words). She is half Cherokee and embraces it!
My grandma knows what's up when she says "Piper is an ugly name". Not even a pretty last name can fix the ugliness.
Piper Rockelle a Youtuber.
Great with sister Harper! Just kidding.
This makes me think of Piper from Brawl Stars.
Getting piped means getting f***ed in UK slang (and maybe more places but I'm not sure). When I hear this "name," all it means to me is "someone who f***s."
To the person saying this can be masculine: no it's not. Pls don't give ur poor son a girl name. He'll go to school eventually.
This is definitely that middle class white person name for someone that thinks their kid is more special and unique than the other millions of kids out there. It's just so obnoxious.
The name Piper would be great for the ages 0-13 but I can't see an adult having this name.
Not a bad name, just sounds really odd.
Such a sweet and cute name, love it!
Pepper comes to mind.
Bad name, terrible loads of nicknames. “Pipe” “Pipey” “Pip” “Pippy/Pippie” “Pee-Pee?”.
Noo I hate this name, sorry! It’s like Pepper. Just not my fave personally.
Goofy name.
This is such a cute name! I once knew someone named Piper.
My little girl is Piper Elsie and everyone loves her name. She loves it too and we are glad we chose it for her. We call her Pie for short sometimes.
Lol I love coming back here every so often to see what mean people say about my name. What's this about it being "masculine"? Does it matter? It's 2022 and names like Avery have been in style since ~1990. I get if that isn't your taste, but almost everyone I've seen with this opinion here has been needlessly rude about it.
To the person below me, I think Piper is a wonderful name. I don’t really love how it has the word pipe in it but honestly it’s a really great name that can suit anyone. My name's Pip and a lot of people ask “is your name actually Piper?” But nah it’s Pip. A lot of people hate my name because apparently I’m a dog or a hamster….
I think Piper is a beautiful name. It’s one of my favorite names. I wish my name was Piper.
Ridiculous. Just plain ridiculous. It would be really hard to have any respect for the parents who choose to give this to their child and when legally of age, it would be completely understandable if they couldn't hold on fast enough to apply for a name change.
Where to begin with certain comments. It's clear a certain someone and her misconceived opinions is having considerable difficulty with the defining qualities of feminism and women's rights. "A girly name isn't a brag or something we care about"? Says who? Generations long before the current by the way, already began using non traditional or unisex names. Some attractive and others absurd. Note, Piper Laurie, born in 1932 who took on the absurd name as her screen name. You don't own any enlightenment here. The difference being, that any person with a lick of sense within any generation, uses that sense when making decisions, such as choosing an appropriate name for their child because YES, it still matters!...And whether on a boy or girl, why it is people with good taste and judgement, regardless however cute it might sound, wouldn't be able to take someone with such a name seriously, especially the parents who burdened their child with it. A name doesn't define a person and could even make a name appealing but there's an extent to this rule. There's nothing "bold" or presumably bold about a woman named Piper who means business (lmao). No offense to any Pipers, unless you carry it forward, you can't be blamed for your parents' ignorance, but should such an exceptional Piper exist, trust me, even then, the name itself, does not speak bold or respectable or proud or graceful, so when there exist extensive possibilities of beautiful and appropriate traditional and non traditional girly or unisex names, PLEASE don't attempt to push this nonsense on potential parents who are already incapable of recognising it. I hope this clears up any ambiguity. Unfortunately, I know someone who actually named their daughter this, and choose to exercise my honourable right to privacy under the "veil of anonymity".
I'd like to add to an earlier comment of mine that you might be able to figure out which. After coming across Piperrae95 whose name is Piper-Rae, the name actually kinda stuck with me. I thought about it and this, along with double name Piper-Rose, the one other decent alternative I could come up with, may actually be the ONLY exceptions to the rule. They're pretty in a not so caricature-like and infantile way. However, I would still never in any way recommend Piper as a given name, but as a short form of a given name such as Philippa, Penelope or Persephone in combination with the middle name Rae or Rose. In my honest opinion, it's a respectable and doable alternative.
This name reminds me of pipes. Why would you want to give your child a name with the word pipe in it? This name also reminds me of Piper Rockelle, and oh my that girl boils my blood!
I like this name and Piper has a cute pronunciation in English!
I’m 21 years old and I adore the name Piper so much. It’s not a pretty name so to speak but in this day and age when feminism & women’s rights are so talked about - having a girly name isn’t the brag that you old lot think it is. Nor is it a bad thing but it’s just not something we care for as much. I think I read a comment that said Piper sounds sassy, spunky, & masculine and then they turned around in the same comment and said they wouldn’t take someone seriously if their name was Piper? That doesn’t make any sense. Regardless, I also couldn’t disagree more. If I met a woman with the name, I’d immediately believe that she meant business. The name is a bold choice & I would naturally assume the parents had enough sense to raise her to be a bold woman. And trust me, that is something the upcoming generations are proud of. So PLEASE name your little girl Piper. She will love you for it.
Personally, I don't like this name. I always associate it with Piper McLean from Heroes of Olympus/ Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan. I always felt like she could have been replaced with someone else from the first series, like Nico or Thalia, or Reyna. I feel like she didn't commit anything major, and what she did do could've been solved a different way. I feel like she kind of ruined the end of Heroes of Olympus, which had so much potential to end better than it did, and would of, had Piper not been part of the series. I'm not even going into The Burning Maze, because I don't want to cry. RIP Jason :(
Even worse than Harper.
I wouldn't wish this name on anyone, especially not a woman.
I like the sound of the name, but in English there’s a word called ”Pipe”. I would like it if pipe was not a word.
Really cute, but not really pretty IMAO.
Piper is a character of the series "Just Add Magic". Darbie, one of the main characters, gets to know her in a theatre course. Piper knows the magical cookbook secret.
I love the name Piper! It sounds so lively and happy. It's such a cute name.
It’s a nice, cute and cool name, I can’t understand the hate.
A Piper who is “9 years old” who commented... You should be happy you’ve got a unique name, you don’t want a common name like mine, do you want to be called Amy B or Amy H or Amy J and so on?
I think this is such a cute little girl's name! Why is there so many bad comments about it?!
Sweet and perky, great name for a girl. I would legit use this for a baby.
I love the name Piper! Super spunky, cute, and not too trendy. I also love Rick Riordan and the Piper McLean reference doesn't bother me at all, it actually probably adds to my liking of it! I would definitely use it.
I know someone called Piper and they are quite cool and a bit greedy. I kind of like it now.
I understand why people like the name Piper, but personally I really hate this name with a passion. I don't care about what anyone says, Piper is one of my least favorite girl's names.
I think of someone who plays a wind instrument.
I think that the name Piper is pretty cool. Wonderful name.
I think it's spunky and cool. Good name.
I personally love the name Piper! Piper is my second favorite girl's name (Nora being my first) and my absolute favorite name combination is Piper Emilia. I don't understand why some people don't like it, but I respect their opinions. However I love it and would definitely use it!
I hate this name so much. Also, it reminds me of sewage pipes. I feel so sorry for the poor girls who were cursed with this trashy, masculine name.
What's with all the hate? I bet your names are just as bad as Piper could ever be! I don't even see how Piper could be a bad name! It's not verbal abuse for us kids! I love my name!
Hi people, I am Piper And I am 9. I just wanted to tell you that having my name is very terrible because I get bullied and people call me “Piper Pig” at school. I hate my mom for calling me this and I’d rather change my name to a common name like Amy.
Well, I am 8 and I think it doesn't matter what people think about your name. My name is also Piper and I think of it as a beautiful name! I hope you stop getting bullied. As a nickname for me in preschool I was called Pipey Dipey. I really hated it and thought of it as a taunt. I hope you know your name doesn't define you!
Doesn’t sound like a name to me.
Hey guys and I'm 23 years old and I have the last name Piper. my full name is Rashaad Piper and I went to this restaurant today and to be a spoiler me having the last name Piper is still being considered a rare name especially for it being a last name. The waiter at this nice restaurant asked me my name and when I told her she just couldn't leave me alone she said you have a unique last name for it to be Piper and it's rare. She also told me I have a proper accent and etc but you can look me up on google and I just got out of prison and I'm doing well so nice to meet all you guys and ladies. To be honest, I laughed at a lot of yall's comments because my last name is rare and when you have a name like that it means more than just playing a flute. Royalty runs in my blood and it's amazing.
PIPE-her(It’s a joke.)
Please please please don’t do this to a poor little girl! I would absolutely hate being stuck with name!
I’m surprised nobody mentioned Piper Rockelle. An actress.
Eh. I think it’s a little too overrated.
Hell no.
What's so bad about it? It's cute and rare...Piper!
I really like this name. I think I prefer it for a boy though. It surprised me, that when I searched the name here it is only categorized as being a female name. Since the name is a surname, and similar in meaning to Harper, I assumed it would at least be listed as unisex!
The way I came here was to Google the question "Is there a cuter girl's name than Piper?", because I certainly couldn't think of one. Was very surprised to read so many negative comments about the name, none of which I agree with, nor have any changed my mind. It's the cutest I have ever heard. It's pretty, too. Honestly, if I had a daughter I am not sure I would name her that. It might be a bit of a burden because there are so many conflicting reactions to it. Personally, I'm not a girl, but if I were I'd be proud and pleased to have and carry the lovely name of Piper. It's cute. It's unique. It's classy.
Other than that, in 2011 the name Piper entered the 100 most popular names given to newborn girls in the United States, and it has increased in popularity every year since then. It is almost in the Top 50! It's not a rare or unusual name anymore. Any comment banking on the unusualness of the name as a negative reason for using it is simply moot and irrelevant.
Piper is not a pretty name. It's harsh, abrasive, and in no way feminine. I'm big on sounds since I'm a musician, and to me it sounds like PIIIIIIIIPPP-purrrr. It's almost like a pirate is talking. All of those P's. If the parents aren't particularly gender-biased and would seek to give a female daughter a unisex or masculine name, this one still doesn't cut it due to being considered, inexplicably, a "girl name".
The meaning is, at best, neutral. "One who plays the pipe" - okay, I love the sound of the pipe, but very few people play it, and I highly doubt that each mother or pair of parents who choose(s) Piper for a baby girl is/are doing so because of a deeply-held aspiration that the girl will grow up and become a virtuoso pipist.
I imagine what it'd be like for someone to say a name lovingly, when I consider names. A teenage or adult man, holding his girlfriend, "Ohhhh... Piper..." Yuck. Not pretty.
And to make it worse, there are no good nicknames. "Pipy"? There are three definitions of that word on Merriam-Webster and they're all negative / unpleasant. I recently heard a grandmother call her granddaughter, "Pipes" (after having already introduced her as "Piper" when my toddler son ran up to her, seeking to be acquainted or whatever he considers it in his still-developing mind). That's still cacophonous; it sounds like a last-name nickname that one sweaty football player would call another sweaty football player after a good play. ("Nice one, Pipes!")
What's left? "Pip"? Blechhhhh. "Pippie" (rhymes with "sorry")? Yuck, and most people would read it like "Pippy", with the added bonus of certain regional accents generating a pronunciation of "Pairy". To seal the deal, it's so freaking popular! It's like, be just a BIT unique, you know? It's not even like this one would qualify for cultures that tend to name kids after deceased relatives or ancestors; the number of women named Piper prior to the last 10 years or so is vanishingly close to zero, so it's not like the baby is being named after Great-Grandma Piper Smith. (Even Piper Lee wasn't Piper. She was Nelle, Piper was her middle name, and it was selected in honor of one Dr. Piper who saved the life of her sister. Note that Piper was, in this case anyway, a last name. Ms. Lee went by Nelle in real life and Piper was her pen name.)
I don't get it. To me, there's literally nothing going for this name. There are so many melodious and beautiful names out there, with pleasing definitions, and someone would choose this one? That's like having 100 menu options at a family restaurant and choosing the vegemite sandwich. Yuck. I know that some people like vegemite but most don't. In my opinion, the high number of Pipers that have entered the world in recent times is a guarantee that local courts will do land-office business in 10+ years as lots of them rush to change their names to something prettier once they turn 18. (P.S. My wife feels the same way about this name.)
Abcde666, I agree with your hilarious perceptions but the author was Harper Lee not Piper Lee and her middle name is her mother's surname. But yeah, Harper/Piper, same unappealing insanity. However short or long, I'm also big on sounds and with this name it's not all the ps that make it so unappealing but just the entire sound of it. Truly makes you wonder how the literal hell David Grohl, who might be a great guy who writes, sings and makes some great music could choose the beautiful names Violet and Ophelia for two of his daughters and be so out to lunch when choosing Harper for the other. Very easy to sympathise also with the commenter who noted the similarity between Piper and Harper. Harper sounds great on a boy. On a girl, they're both so awful but personally, I think Harper is worse.
Piper McLean in The Heroes of Olympus series personally ruined this name for me. I prefer Harper.
This website says it's for people who play flutes.Wikipedia says it's Scottish Gaelic for "pepper."
Love this name so much! Piper Circe makes such a gorgeous name for a book character, but I can picture the right person pulling it off.
Piper Willowbrook, also known as Mysticon Striker from the Nickelodeon cartoon 'Mysticons'.
NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick named his daughter Piper Grace Harvick!
As a 61 year old woman named Piper, I have only positive feelings about my name and trust me, unusual names are far more accepted now than when I was growing up! I remember being prepared for questions about my name when I was a child and teenager but no teasing. I knew my name would always be a conversation starter. I was ALWAYS the only one who had that name so there was never any confusion in classes or at a job! As I have gotten older, I have received more compliments about my name than ever. I can't understand the controversy over Piper as a name. While it still surprises me to find out that someone else has the same name, I welcome you to the club!
My name is Piper Laurel and I absolutely love my name. I have only ever met one other Piper and she was incredibly kind. People who meet me often tell me they have never met anyone else with my name and I have also had people tell me that they can’t think of a name that would suit me better. Throughout my life, I have never heard someone say something bad about my name, in fact more often than not they tell me how much they love my name and how unique and beautiful it is. That being said, Piper is not a name for everyone. However, I believe that if you have nothing nice to say, you should say nothing at all especially considering the fact that people don’t choose their names: their parents do. I also have to say I am so proud of my fellow Pipers for showing grace when others have said unkind things.
The people that say Piper is a bad name are INSANE.
Piper Mclean from the Heroes of Olympus series is awesome.
And Piper is a great name. (love Aphrodite).
Piper is a cute, spunky sounding name for a cute, spunky, small dog, like a Westie, but sorry, I don't care for it used as a person's name. I have trouble hearing a grown woman being called Piper. The older the woman the worse it sounds. Piper spelled with a y, Pyper, maybe is a little better, but only for a girl or a teen, but I don't like it for a woman's name, especially a mature woman.
In 2018, 2 is the most common age for an American (U.S.) Piper who is registered female with the Social Security Administration. It is the 1, 592nd most common female first name for living U.S. citizens.
As a 48-year bearer of this name, I can attest that it hasn't been a cakewalk. But I've had the legal power to change my name for 30 years and I haven't. I was named after the sandpiper bird by parents who were NOT hippies. I wasn't given a middle name and I've never had a nickname. I hated my name growing up and threw tantrums because I didn't get named SANDRA/SANDY. I got teased on the playground all the time because face it, kids are ruthless jerks. But hey, they were just as mean to the kids named MIKE and RICK. A lot of crappy stuff may rhyme with PIPER, but a lot of crappy stuff rhymes with MIKE and RICK too. The truth is, no one is safe from childhood verbal abuse, no matter what you're named, but eventually, we all grow up, the teasing stops and you get over it. Was I a tomboy? Sorta. Was I girly? Not so much. Was I smart? Very. Did I grow up to be sexy? Well, maybe not as sexy as FRANCESCA did, but my sexiness got to sneak in under the radar and that had its advantages in many ways. My name doesn't have sexiness *expectations* attached to it and that's VERY nice. I think people maybe underestimate me because my name gives them no idea what to expect. I like that. I like to think I leave them with a great impression of what all PIPERS are like (you're very welcome my young namesakes).PIPER used to be extremely unique but then, thanks to Charmed, PIPER flew onto the Social Security Administration's list of Top Girl Names in 1990 and all the way to #67 by 2015 and 2016. Now there's PIPERS everywhere, I guess. I've never met one. But I do find it interesting that many PIPERS responded here and put in a good word for our name. I used to be the only one who commented on sites like these. And I used to say many unpleasant things, begging people to NOT name their daughters PIPER. Now I think I'm past all the hate for my name. I can accept that it is what it is. If you love it, go for it - name your daughter PIPER. Just be warned, she WILL hate you for it for a brief time. If you hate the name PIPER though, please do yourself a favor and don't post here under the veil of anonymity. The pathetic irony is profound.
Am I the only guy here named Piper? I love my name, it's unique. I honestly can't see it as a girl's name, other than in the same way you might name a girl "James" or "Spencer" because you wanna be unique. Piper is reminiscent of names like Parker & Peter, two very masculine names. It's great for boys, trust me.
This is my kitten's name. She's a girl so stop hating on this beautiful, amazing name, people!
Piper McLean, a character from the famous “Heroes of Olympus”-series by Rick Riordan should also be considered as a well known Piper.
This "CRAPPY" name is mine and I love it! I am a straight A student, you haters need to grow up and get a life because Piper is the most unique spunky name. Its better than Mary-Anne or Sally. My name is unique and I'm the only one with it in my entire school and I'm liked by most people in my school.
Piper is a good name so don't hate on it!
Piper McLean is a character in "The Heroes of Olympus" series.
I like it on a girl, it's much better than Harper or Madison. I like the nickname Pia.
My personal impression is that I found this name a bit quirky back in the 90s when Charmed aired, and hadn't heard it used since on a prominent TV character until Orange is the new black, which I started watching last year. This, combined with the popularity of names like Harper (a person who plays a harp) and other musical names such as Cadence, Lyric, Harmony, Melody etc. opened my eyes to further naming possibilities. The options nowadays, and versatility, is one thing about modern naming trends that I like- no more repression and naming based on fitting in to social stereotypes. I was very surprised to read the comments on this name (so many haters!) My opinion from the beginning has always been that Piper came from a person who played a pipe. And as a lover of pipe music, as a Scottish descendant, I think that this name could be a modern spunky way of honouring this. While the pied Piper was male, or so the tale goes, I find this name too close to Pippa for it to be male. Whereas nicknames I like are Pipes and Pip (the latter being associated with the boy in Great Expectations) which can both be used on girls.
My name is Piper, I’m not the biggest fan of my name, it’s not as pretty as most but does make me a little sad when people are saying Piper is an ugly, horrible or disgusting name- it makes me feel bad. If you want to name your child Piper I think you should think of a really nice middle name, mine is Piper Lucy and I like my name with my middle name. I also like Piper Mae, Piper Alexandra, Piper Marie or Piper Grace. To me Piper isn’t the best name in the world but it’s not that bad.
I do like the name Piper, to the alternative of Poppy.
Piper Eressea Kerman is an American memoirist convicted of felony money-laundering charges; her memoir Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison about her experiences in prison was adapted into the Netflix original comedy-drama series Orange Is the New Black.
So what if it doesn't sound feminine?
I know TWO little girls named Piper and I always smile and nod and say what a sweet name it is to the parents if the name is brought up, but privately I CANNOT understand why anyone would name a little girl this. I think middle school and high school would be such a pain for these girls
1: It has become crazy-popular (WHY?),
2: It automatically makes mean-spirited kids of that age think of blow-job jokes. Sorry, but, really, am I the only one that sees that? Plus, as an earlier poster noted it sounds like the dutch word "to suck off." Do you really want to have to explain to your daughter who is getting teased what that means? I think not.
3: I just can't take Piper seriously as a 35-60 year old woman in business. CEO? Supreme Court Justice? I think not. Please just pick a different name.
My youngest daughter is named Piper Amanda. I am a serious Charmed fan and never heard the name Piper in everyday life. I chose the name Piper because it is unique and very uncommon. Amanda is my grandmother's and mothers middle name. So I chose Piper Amanda for its uniqueness and to honor the 2 most important women in my life. Piper is a lovely name.
It's a nice name for a cat.
I love this name. I think it's spirited, uncommon and intelligent.
Piper Willis is the youngest Willis sibling on the Australian soap Neighbours, played by Mavournee Hazel.
I never really thought about the name until I became aware of the actress Piper Laurie and her great work. Ever since, I have loved the name for its uniqueness and simplicity.
My daughter's name is Pyper so of course I love it... but I chose a different spelling, I think it's adorable and I wouldn't change it for anything. I love my little Pypsqueak and her name matches her well.
Being a fan of Orange is the New Black, I immediately think of Piper Chapman, who is perhaps the most boring character on the show. It's not a bad name otherwise; names that begin with "P" usually aren't appealing to me, but this one sounds less ugly than say, Paisley or Peyton. I don't particularly like it, but I wouldn't try to convince someone not to use it, either.
Piper Morey (played by Autumn Reeser) was the name of the bully on the TV show "George Lopez".
I named my daughter Piper but I spell it with a 'y'instead of the 'i'. Her name is Pyper Izzabella. I love the name because it is unique. Everyone that asks her name loves it as well.
I think that this name is AMAZING and I disagree with everyone that said this name was a BOY'S name! It is NOT! This name is beautiful and unique! OKAY PEOPLE? I sadly do not know anyone with this name, which is very sad because it's so beautiful. Have a nice day.
Piper is a wonderful name! Every time I hear it I get a big smile on my face. Piper is a female that is happy, good spirited, energetic, and a loyal friend. Reminder; the name does not make the person but rather the person makes the name.
I absolutely love this name and think it is completely suitable for both genders, although I prefer it on girls. I think having an unusual name may be a pain as a child, but as I got older I appreciated the initial interest people had which can be good in many situations.
Piper is a perfectly fine name. People say it is a boy's name, but when you think about it, it's not. Piper could fit for either gender. Sure my name is Piper, but I don't mind. Many people say that Piper is not a good name, but I disagree. Everybody has their own opinion, and that is mine.
Piper is a pretty name. Unfortunately Orange is the New Black has rendered it unusable for me. Also, it might be a bit trendy, and therefore date. In addition, there are a lot of little Piper's around.
I dislike the name. Sorry but all I can think of is pipes and diapers.
You can't measure ignorance and certainly there is much of it here. The name Piper is a nice name. Someone's opinion of the name does not make it "horrid" it just makes them rude and that's a fact. To say "it's not for me" is one thing. Some people have no kooth...
Okay, I hear all about this hating of the name Piper. Personally, I love it
because it is mine. Whoever thinks of that person as a stuck up snob is wrong. All the Pipers I have met [only two other than me] are all very good friends. Not a bully and not stuck up. And to think of how it is going to be when I am older, it will not be horrible. And my teacher used to call me Pipesnice, so I think that shows a little bit of my personality, and it is not a stuck up snob. I think the worst thing about the name is your brothers calling you Piper the diaper wiper, and even that gets old.
To all of the people saying Piper is a horrible name, I've been called that 18 years of my life. It's a professional name too, it might not be the best for getting a job, but it's better than North West. And to all the people who say that they would rather name their kid Madison or Emily, at least I don't have a Plain-Jane name. As for the teasing, that does happen, and nicknames also happen. In my animation class I'm known as Airplane. I don't see that as a problem, in fact I like it. Comment whatever you like about the name, but think about the people who have that name. You wouldn't like someone to criticize your name, would you?
I had to laugh when you wrote it's better than North West. I agree. I am not a name hater but am starting to see that all the name haters on here have tons of time on their hands. They have to hate in some fashion so why not hate on names anonymously. Could become a full-time job.
I think Piper is cute for a girl. It's my maiden name too. We have a little girl in the neighborhood named Piper. I would never think her name doesn't suit her. All you name haters: grow up and get a life.
My name is Piper and I love my name! It is unique!
WOW. The name Piper gets a lot of hate! Personally I really like the name Piper. I think it sounds cute as a little girls name, but strong and rustic (can you use rustic to describe a name?) yet feminine as an older girl's name. I feel like a Piper would be your best friend and do everything in her power to protect you, but also might punch you in the face if you got on her nerves. Ya know? Anyways I don't know why I feel so compelled to stick up for the name. I didn't even know it existed until I fell in love with a book series that had a girl named Piper in it.
My mom's friend has a granddaughter named Piper. I love the name. I think it sounds cute and vibrant. I am not a fan of stuffy old lady names. I would much rather have a young sounding name than an old sounding name.
My best friend's name is Piper Anne McLean and I think it is a lovely name.
Whenever I hear the name Piper I think of the character in Rick Riordan's Heroes of Olympus series, Piper McLean. I didn't really like the name before and pronounced it as the way you would pronounce the not-really-a-word pipper (yes, I am an idiot). Now I am fine and might even like the name if not for so many people using the name nowadays (not a lot, honestly but I like names to be more... unique; I don't appreciate multiple people sharing a name, because isn't it supposed to be YOURS?) I know that is selfish thinking but still, it annoys me when someone has the same name as me and when someone else calls me that person also reacts. I know I've gotten a bit off topic (or rather a lot), so I'll just sum it all up- even if your name isn't well known or pleasing to other people or even your own ears, remember that it is still your name and you will come to appreciate it (or at some point in your lives anyways).
I think of the plant species Piper which is common in South America. It is the species that black pepper comes from. I see it as neither a male or female name but I would lean more towards a female name.
Piper is way too trendy and makes me think about smoking a pipe. There're much more feminine and prettier names to choose from.
Internet personality Piper Leichester bares this name.
This is my daughter's name, and I know quite a few under the age of 2. We've had nothing but compliments with this name. Everyone loves it. It is also 97 on the SSA list from 2013, so I think we'll be seeing this name a lot more. I named her after the actress Piper Laurie (although we get asked about Charmed, OITNB, and Piper Perabo a lot).
How can this be a fad when it has been around for over 50 years! My daughter is called Piper and everywhere we go everyone says how lovely her name is. Shame on you all those people who have slandered this name, I'm sure many people would have an opinion on your name but are respectful enough to keep it to themselves.
I'm not really fond of this name, and I don't see myself ever using it on a future daughter. It's just another fad name. I'm sorry, it's just way too trendy for my taste.
One of my friends is called Piper and it really suits her as she isn't a girly girl at all, but I personally am not too fond of the name, it's seems a little harsh. The only upside I can really think of it is that it's very original. One of the struggles that my friend has is that everyone mistakes her for Pippa, which she doesn't appreciate! We call her pips as a nickname.
My mother gave me her maiden name as my first name, Piper. Born in 1954 I'm one of the first Pipers. Teasing by my peers was inevitable, kids can be cruel, but every name has rhyming words, not just Piper. My name has never held be back in anyway. I was good in school, most teachers found my name easy to remember, and that continued through my college years. I have had the pleasure of meeting other Pipers and recently found out that a distant family member did as my mother had & gave her maiden name to her baby daughter, Piper. For others to judge a person by their name, or what their name might be, is wrong. Each of us should get to know a person based on their merits. You would like that to happen to you, I'm sure.
This name sounds awful to me. It doesn't even sound like a firstname. Not feminine at all, would be the same if you name a girl "Baker", "Butcher" or "Grinder". Would also not use it for a boy, I don't see the reason behind giving surnames as first names anyway if they don't have the sound of a firstname at all or if they aren't connected to the family history.
Every person I meet loves my name, Piper-Rae. And right away they think of Piper Laurie and Piper Perabo. I was named after Piper Laurie and have NEVER met anyone with my name. I know there are people who share the same name, but it is very unique. I'm not trying to be rude, but at least I don't have a common name such as Ashley, Meagan, Carly, or Hannah. You shouldn't not like someone because of their name. It's not like it was our fault.
Here are the jokes/nick names a lot of us hear.
1)Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers
2) Piper Diaper
3) Hyper Piper
3)Pippy Long Stocking (I don't know if you other Pipers hear it, but I am a red head like the little girl off the show)
4) pip
5) pipe
6) Pippy
7) diaper
8) Peter
9) the pied Piper
10) do ya play the bagpipes?
I'll have you haters know my daughters' name is Pyper and I think it's one of the most precious names out there. Didn't any of your mothers teach you if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all? Freedom of speech just went out the window with all of you guys. I don't care if those are your opinions or not some things are meant to be left unsaid. If you don't like what I have to say, deal with it! This is my opinion. Thank you, and sorry if I offended anyone but my daughter Pyper is one precious gift to me.
I don't understand what parents would choose to stick this name on their little girl. I mean, it rhymes with Diaper, for crying out loud.
Definitely for a girl. On a boy it's prissy as can be.
My name is Piper and I quite like it, I don't get picked on at all. My friends just call me Pip or Pepper, I think the name is great because it's original. I've only met 1 or 2 people with the same name as me in my whole life, I like being able to be different to the person sitting next to me. Reading through the comments of people saying they picture Pipers being stuck up and get everything handed to us isn't true. I find it funny.
It's cute and quite unusual. I like the name Piper; I don't see how it's "silly".
I think it is an okay name, not my style though. And certainly not as bad as the commenters here are making it out to be.
I respect your opinion if you don't like the name Piper, but I like it. It's cute, and I can see any type of girl having the name Piper, from tomboy to girly-girl, and even just a regular girl! It's okay, for a boy, but I wouldn't name a boy Piper. I just love the name Piper!
I think this name is totally awesome for a boy, it's actually unisex.
Love this name. This is my daughter's name. I always think of the actress Piper Laurie when I think of this name.I don't understand the hate for this name. It's a name that's actually been around awhile, isn't made up, and is easy to pronounce. It actually hit the top 100 last year (which I didn't know until after I named her). It definitely fits my little girl.
Author Piper Kerman who wrote "Orange is the New Black" in which there is now a television series and the main character is named Piper Chapman.
Hey. My name's Piper (Piper Dawn). As a girl who has been writing it on forms and answering to it for 17 years, I think it's a fantastic name. I've never met another Piper in person (however, there are a few "friend of a friend" Pipers in the world). I was named after Piper Laurie, because my mother is a Stephen King fanatic and Piper Laurie played the mother in "Carrie". The only thing I don't like about the name is everyone assuming my mom watched Charmed (I was born a year and a half before the show aired). I like the name for a boy or a girl, but I prefer it on a girl. I may be a bit biased, though. :p
Also, I've always gotten complimented on my name. Weird to see so much Piper hate on this page.
Love this name! I called my cat 'Piper."
Piper is the name of a main character in the action film 'Drive Angry' she is portrayed by Amber Heard.
My name is Piper, Piper Holly. I love my name! I like it because it's original, and I have only met a few people with this name. Most people think I was named after Piper from 'Charmed', but I was actually named after a woman from a gardening show from HGTV. I never got teased by the name (Unless you count 'Piper Diaper' which I got from my siblings.) I got called Hyper Piper, because I'm hyper. It's a cute name for a little girl. Just imagine it, a little girl of about 5 with pigtails comes up to you and says, "Hi! I'm a Piper!" I think it's just adorable. Plus there are many book characters with the name Piper. (Piper McLean, Piper Wesley) Piper was an original name for someone who plays a flute, or 'pipe'. It is pronounced Pie-per.
My name is Piper, and I am proud.
I named my daughter Piper as it's a unusual name and she will probably never meet anyone in her life with the same name. She has very unique and beautiful name and once you have heard the name you will never forget it. A beautiful name for a beautiful girl and to the prat who made the r kelly comment and said Piper is an ignorant name, you are a nob head. It's just a name, get a life!
I would name my daughters after the Charmed ones Prudence "Prue", Piper, Phoebe, and Paige.
I apologize for previously referring to this name as "vomit-inducing" However, I still am not a fan. I honestly don't understand the appeal to this name. Nothing about seems remotely feminine or even "first-namey" about it to me. Maybe part of it is I've never meet anyone with the name outside of fictional characters in books and movies. It just doesn't seem... real to me. But hey, that's just me. I have a hard time taking this name seriously. However, if you like it, go right ahead and use it. Everyone has the right to their opinion of course, and although this name no longer completely disgusts me, I really don't understand why others like it. It's a pretty strange fad if you ask me.
Spaz123, personally, no need to apologise to me. Based on your entire comment, it seems evident you possess and know the meaning of common sense, part of which, as you understand, is that there is a significant difference between names given to fictional characters and human beings, and whether any such name was meant to be or transferably applicable on a human being of either gender or at all. Whether given to a fictional character or actual human being, different, unique names can be appealing but not the caricature type variety. Instead of trading in her self-respect for the screen name Piper Laurie, she should have stuck with her real, beautiful and respectable name, Rosetta Jacobs. Yes, for human use, this goshawful name is vomit-inducing.
It makes me think of smoking a pipe. I think it sounds silly on children and adults. Why would anyone want a name with the word pipe in it. What's next? Cigar? Smokes? Cigarettes?
I am a fan of the name since it is mine. I was born in 1968 so I have had it for a couple of years now. I am a professional in my career and constantly receive compliments on my name. I have had people tell me that that made fun of my name before they ever met me and they even apologized to me for it (like I would ever know!) I am so thankful to my mother for choosing this name for me.
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
I know two girls named Piper. I can assure you no one thinks "what the hell's with her name" when they hear it. No offense guys but it's getting pretty old you guys saying "imagine growing up with it" or "doesn't suit an old person". A name suits a person no matter what age. In reality people usually think someone doesn't suit any other name than the one they were given. It doesn't matter if something sounds good for only someone of a certain age. It wont matter if real life when you actually meet them.
Don't get surprised if R. Kelly wants your child because his ego name is the Pied Piper. People need something else better to do than to name their children ignorant names.
I used to love this name for a girl when I was younger but my tastes changed and though I still rather like it its far from my favorite. As middle name I like more for a boy especially to brighten up a lovely but common serious name like James or Thomas maybe it's because I have a cousin Peter with no middle who I always joked should make it Piper long before I ever heard of it on a girl.
Piper for a girl rocks. Love it. I never heard of it until the show Charmed and the three witches - one is named Piper. I just think it's catchy. I hope it doesn't turn into another Kaitlyn though - yuck - overused.
Hey, my name is Piper, back off, lol. I have survived 33 years with the name, and hope to live many more. As a kid I was horribly teased and told people my name was Anna. Now I like the name enough, and everyone always tells me it's so cool. Piper is me, as we are our names. Name your kid Piper if it suits you. :)
I am really smitten with "Piper" as a surname (where it belongs), but must retract any fondness beyond that.Placing aside the unattractive tone it has when spoken-- "Piper" is a terribly, abominably infantile and unprofessional name.
Parents truly do not weigh the potential obstacles... while I am aware that people are unable to choose their own names (in must cases)... in all truth, I would be hesitant to let a "Piper Smith" perform brain surgery on me; or a "Piper Worthington" aid in defense and fight for me in court. "Piper is me, as we are our names. Name your kid Piper if it suits you." •
I do believe that you just defeated your own point. If my name is Francesca, I am my name-- but the final "You" tagged at the end of your sentence seems to be directing a parent to name their child Francesca because it suits /them/, which is entirely canceling out any reasoning or incentive that you were trying to further describe.
We are what our parents named us; we are not our names, necessarily. A child can easily rebel and despise the name "Piper" for multiple accounts... one being that it is a name that does not fit, as her (or his) parents chose.
You'd be hesitant to let a Piper Smith do brain surgery on you, regardless of whether he or she was qualified and in the top of his or her field. LOL! You are stuck up. Of course you can change your name when you grow up. I'm a happy Piper now and wouldn't dream of it.
I like the way that is pronounced as Pee-per.
Love this name! So cute on a girl. Sounds adorable artistic clever and smart. Would totally use it! Nickname PIP.
I think it's really cute!
I know a girl from school who is called Philippa and has Piper as a nickname!
Piper McClean is a character from The Heroes Of Olympus series. She is a daughter of Aphrodite and is one of the seven in the great prophecy. She goes on a quest with her friends Jason and Leo.
This name reminds me of the little birds on the beach called sandpipers. I would name my daughter this for the sake of free spirit and the appeal of a somewhat nautical name.
"Piper" sounds like the name of a teenage bully. Very snobby. And why use Piper when you can use the amazing "Philippa?"
Oh, it's absolutely adorable, but it's quite tomboyish, masculine even, and it doesn't make me think of someone quite intelligent. Plus, it's becoming massively popular.
I love this name! Though maybe that's from watching Charmed because Piper Halliwell is my favourite character.
I have a daughter named Piper, yes after the "Charmed" character, I think the name is lovely (obviously). She was born on Christmas day and I couldn't see naming her Holly or Noel (both great names). We didn't know what we were having and so only had a few names picked out for boys and girls, one look at her sweet little face and she was a Piper. We call her Pi for short after the number 3.14 NOT Pie as in to eat. We have worried about the Pie and eating references as she grows older, but for now she is a happy, popular little girl who adores being the only Piper in her school. I don't feel the name is childish or boyish in anyway. And if ever she feels she needs a more "grown up" or less different name she can use her middle name Grace. A tried and true name.
I am expecting my first daughter in December. We originally had picked the name "Aeryn," but became increasingly concerned about the aggravation it would give her all her life for having to correct its spelling. When I heard "Piper" used as a girl's name for the first time a week or so ago, it INSTANTLY jumped out at me as a wonderful "modern" name for a girl. This is a BOLD name. This is a name that would not be well-suited for an introvert. Given that her mother and I are anything BUT introverts, I think we're probably safe in using it. As a friend said when asked for her opinion, "Piper" sounds HAPPY, CUTE, HIP, and one day... SEXY! An "extra" perk for me in choosing this name is that I'm a private pilot, and I'm passionate about airplanes and flying in general... I was hoping to find a name that in some way would pay some homage to this passion I have (hence the "Aer" spelling of "Erin"). But of course, as "Piper" is an everyday name in the aviation world, it's a great name, at least for us. Looking at several rating/usage charts on several websites, this name is rapidly growing in popularity. Looking through the comments on this site, there were a lot of folks who've stated their disdain for this name - but interestingly the frequency of those negative comments have steadily decreased over the past several years, and the positive comments are steadily increasing. It's a name on the rise, no doubt. But if you think your daughter is apt to be one who is quiet, delicate, and reserved (hint: examine yourself), then this name would be a poor choice.
Former US candidate for vice president Sarah Palin has a daughter named Piper. If she likes this name than it can't be that bad. I kind of like this name for being unusual, unique, and playful. It does however lean towards childish than mature, but I suppose it could pass as a modern name for an adult.
I like this name a lot. It's not overly cutesy, and I like the musical connotation. Combined with a traditional middle name, I think it makes quite a mature combination. A fun, though admittedly a little cutesy, combination for twin girls might be Piper and Harper.
Piper Aircraft makes single and twin engine light airplanes.
I think Piper is a cute name, but I wouldn't use it for any of my children. It's just not my taste. I did, however, name my new puppy this. It suits her very well and she is indeed hyper.
I see many people hate this name but that's their opinion and I respect that. I don't see it as a bad name, it's unique for a boy or a girl. Although I have a cousin named Pyper (girl) and she's not getting teased or anything, many people have complimented on her name too. Well maybe if you had a friend or relative with the name Piper then maybe you would like it better. Also in the book "Handle With Care" by Jodi Picoult, there is a character named Piper Reece (female) who is the main character's best friend.
Even though I actually kind of like this name, I would never use it for a child since I'm Dutch and Piper sounds a little too much like the Dutch word 'pijpen' which means 'to suck off'.
My name is Piper. I'm 17 and a girl. I've met a few people with my name. I love it, it's super different and no one ever forgets my name or gets it mixed up. I don't think anyone should pass judgment or call a name ridiculous or anything, because it's just a name. I'd rather have an unusual name than an average "plain Jane" name.
This is a fabulous name! It's adorably cute yet strong at the same time. It seems as though a charming and willful young lady would be the bearer of such a name. Looking at the popularity it has only recently been on the charts, but I imagine it's going to be around for quite some time with how quickly it's become popular. I agree that in 5-10 years or so people will be more accepting and not so harsh on it. I just cannot say enough how striking I think it is. Maybe it's true you like it or hate it?
Piper is very trashy, pathetic, and unfeminine. It sounds better for a dog than a human.
Piper Pallin, daughter of American vice-presidential candidate Sarah Pallin.
I prefer this on a boy.
Personally I think this name is lovely. Piper sounds so sweet, youthful and bubbly. I love the meaning, too. In my opinion, it does sound feminine. I can't even imagine this name on boys. Just because it doesn't end with "a", doesn't mean Piper isn't a girl's name. I think people are coming down so hard on it because it's a modern name. In thirty years time, this name will be a classic and no one will say that kind of thing. If you are thinking about naming your daughter Piper then go right ahead; it's a lovely name with a beautiful meaning.
I actually like the name. It's very original and cute, but can sound more mature with a middle name or as a middle name.
Piper Smith was the victim of a cartoon video six girls in her grade made, about ways to kill her.
My Mum and I were having a chat last year and I discovered that maybe my name could have been Pyper, after my Mum's maiden name. I would've been fine with this name, and it goes well with my last name, too. It's a very pretty name, but I'm happy enough my name's Rachel instead!
My name is Piper and I must say I love the name. It's funny to hear people say it's a horrible name. I guess you either love it or you hate it! I see more & more little girls being named Piper, so cute. (I would assume because of the show Charmed) but I am 33 years old and grew up with a very unique name and I wouldn't change it for the world. I have only met two other Pipers' in my life and it is great not to have to share a common name with everyone else!
I think Piper is such a spunky, fun, happy name. Definitely on my list!
Piper is a HORRIBLE name. I am not sorry that I said it and am not ashamed because I am expressing my opinion. I've heard of a girl who was name Piper who got teased so badly that she ended up getting a name change.
I was named Piper far earlier than the show Charmed debuted, and one thing I often hear when I introduce myself is "That's a name the won't be forgotten in a hurry!" and it's true. Hardly anyone forgets my name ever. I've also heard a few times "With a name like that you're sure to do great things".
I agree with night-shiver. The name is a bit out-there but I like it. And it's much better than Parker or Addison for a girl. I think of it as a more feminine name but it's okay on a boy too.
This sounds like a name for a little boy in Medieval times. Sounds kind of weird on a little girl this day and age.
I do think that some people are far too hard on this name. It really isn't an ugly name any more than Harper or Parker are. I can't really imagine it on a boy, as it sounds like a feminine, and even quite cutesy name, to me. It makes me think of pretty girls, not tomboys. It could be that Piper Perabo has influenced my thinking, but this name doesn't sound very masculine to me despite the ending. I'm just not sure how mature this will sound on a grown-up, but it's certainly much better than names like Kayla, Keeley, MacKenzie, and the like.
This name is definitely not a favorite. Very masculine to me.
The first Pink Floyd album is called Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
I think this is a rather funny name, possibly because it rhymes with "hyper". I would give this name to a hyper character, possibly a squirrel, in a story. For some reason, it makes me think of the lyrics "the Piper will lead us to reason" and "the Piper's calling you to join him" from the song Stairway to Heaven.
I think Piper is an OK name. I probably won't name my child Piper, but if I did, I wouldn't name my son this incredibly feminine name.
This is an absolutely ridiculous name for either sex. I don't understand its appeal at all.
I actually LOVE the name Piper! NO it isn't very "girly". But who says a name has to be feminine in order to be a beautiful name for a girl. It has a positively wonderful simpleness to it, and possesses a noble air. I would consider giving a child this name.
It sounds so medieval.
A goshawful name. Acceptable on a boy, but vomit inducing for a girl.
Actors Melora Hardin & Gildart Jackson have a daughter Piper (born 2005).
I named my third daughter Piper. I love the name, but when I named her Piper, people thought I was out of my mind:) It's original. My daughter is a bubbly, happy, and energetic girl with lots of friends. Besides the occasional hyper Piper, she has gotten teased with the nickname 'airplane'. It's a sweet name. I wouldn't name a boy Piper, because it sounds girly to me.
Not really famous, but Canadian folk singer Gary Fjellgaard's granddaughter is named Piper.
One of Daisy's cousins in the novel 'How I Live Now' by Meg Rosoff.
This name is cute and unique!
Piper means pepper in Latin.
I don't think Piper is a bad name. It is unique. There are definitely worse names out there. I have also seen Piper spelled Pyper.
I used to think Piper was an odd name but now I just seem to like it! Then this summer I met my new friend Piper, she is really nice and makes me think that I really like Piper. I already liked it a little bit but now I think it's nice, she has no problem with it. I love it too! Some people call her Hyper Piper because sometimes she can be a little hyper! I'm starting to think it's very nice!
Hi, my name is Piper and to tell you the truth I don't really like it, the only reason why I don't like having it is it would be nice if I had some other name. My mother decided to name me Piper after my own grandmother. Her full name was Piper Elizabeth, mine is Piper Anne though. When I get older nothing is going to stop me from changing my name, though my own grandmother had it. I think it's not original to name someone the same name someone in your family already has. I think Piper Alexandra does make a real pretty combo. I'm just letting out my opinions out that's all. The name Piper is not ugly though. I actually think it's quite pretty.
But that's just my opinion, if you plan to name someone Piper after anybody in your family, be my guest. It's your child anyways.
This name is just ugly! It reminds me of a pipe! I mean really it's pipe with an 'r' on the end! It's just plain ugly! I am not really trying to insult anyone with this name. I am just giving my opinion! And if you don't like it deal with it! I just had to type this.
I'm not ashamed saying this name is just plain horrid! And you can type whatever your opinion on this name, that's why there is a comment section, you can express what you think of the name, you can type whenever you like it or not, or give very useful information on who bears this name and things like that. Now if the person doesn't like it, don't go telling people to be ashamed of it! In my opinion Piper is ugly! There! Deal with it! Don't go saying they shouldn't type that! It's none of your buisness, if a person likes it or not. Another thing on Piper, it may seem cute at first when you're little, but imagine having to grow up with it! Just wanted to get that of my chest.
For everyone who said Piper was a bad, you are very rude! Piper is a nice name and it should not be insulted. I do not insult any name on BTN unless the name is Osama or Adolf, Hitler, Hudame or whatever. You should be ashamed!
This name is utter CLOYING CRAP. It is also Latin for Pepper and an old occupational surname. It is bollocks.
Cute, but a little childish. And to me, this is a girl's name. I'd never name a boy Piper.
I don't like the name Piper at all for a girl. For a boy it sounds ok, but not great. To me Piper is a red-headed, blue-eyed tomboy who goes around yelling with a stick and is obnoxious, impudent and ill-mannered. Note: Piper also rhymes with hyper! So, it also reminds me of a tough-wannabe girl who is always hyper.
I think Piper is much nicer and stronger sounding on a boy. On a girl it seems ditzy.
This name is cute. Trendy, but cute.
Piper is a cute name at first, but it gets old fast.
Cute name for a little girl. Not so sure about when she grows older, however.
I love this name, I think it's gorgeous and classic. I plan on naming my first daughter Piper Alexandra.
Actress Piper Perabo is named after actress Piper Laurie.
Gillian Anderson has a daughter called Piper. And I think it is a lovely name.
Piper Laurie - the screen name of Rosetta Jacobs - a famous stage and screen actress for over 50 years. Her recent credits include roles on St. Elsewhere, Murder She Wrote, Matlock, Beauty and the Beast, ER, Diagnosis Murder and Frasier.
Piper is a horrible name for a girl! It's not feminine at all. I wonder where it sprang up from.
Middle, and later oldest, sister in popular TV show 'Charmed', Piper Halliwell.
