Sydney is a really nice name. I definitely prefer the spelling Sydney. And Syd is a cool nickname.
Pretty!
Yes it's a cute name but it's after a city.
I like this name. One of my closest friends is named it. It's like a brand-new version of Cindy.
My name is Sydney even tho my user name is Jay I just really like the name Jay. Anyway, Sydney is a cute name and itz unisex so u could name a boy or a material girl but I do think if ur gonna name ur boy Sydney spell it Sidney cause Sydney looks more feminine.
I like this name for anyone regardless of gender. I know that lots of people perceive this spelling as only “feminine,” but I don’t. Overall, this is an amazing name. It’s very beautiful to say, and I’ve always liked it. If you like this name, feel free to check out it’s sibling: Sidney.
Modern name. Trendy. Unique. Pretty.
For those that are reading, whoever searches up a name and puts a bad comment on it, most definitely it’s because they felt personally insecure or anger towards a person bears this name in their life. Or this person is just miserable, hates the world and lives for online trolling.
This is a great name!
Very cute name for a girl or animal but on a human male, no sorry it’s too unique.
Girl name okay? Unless you want a pansy name btw still bad but worse on a boy.
This name is cute. I like this spelling the best. Some of the others are kinda weird, I once met a girl named Sidknee I always thought that was a strange spelling.
Cute! I kinda like it!
Sydney is adorable for a girl. Maybe Sidney for a boy? Either way, a great name.
Very dated!
♥ amazing name.
Best name ever! :)
Sydney is my name as well and it fits perfectly with my life. All my friends call me Squid and Syd all the time which makes me pretty happy.
I like the name Sydney for a boy. I think it's strong and has a lovely meaning (one who dwells near a meadow/island). Also, it reminds me of Sydney, Australia, which is pretty cool :)God bless you ❤️.
Sydney is a nice name. Honestly, I can’t really imagine the name on a boy for some reason. No offense to the boys named Sydney.
I can’t imagine this on anyone past the age of 2.
I used to think Sydney was a masculine name, but now I think it's very unisex. I wouldn't personally use it but it's still a very good and nice name.
I wish this name had stayed a boy's name. It sounds better on a boy, and there are so many more good girl's names than boy's names already. Sydney is a good name for a girl, but all the best somewhat feminine-sounding boy's names (Sydney, Claire, etc.) get taken and turned into girl's names. Then boys are just left with John and James and Michael.
I hate the name Sydney for a girl. It is a BOY'S name. Just as I hate Joscelyn, Hilary, Vivian and Beverley for a man, as they sound feminine. I dislike strange spellings of names too as it makes it difficult for the person for the whole of their life, having to keep spelling it out.
My name is Sydnee and I'm a girl. And I absolutely love it. I love the way people respond when I tell them how it's spelled. My grandpa always tells me that I have a strong name and that it fits my personality.
It sounds fine but it seems to be popular.
It is not sexist to prefer this traditionally masculine name on boys only. Some people choose to follow traditional naming practices. Or, maybe they just think this name doesn't sound right on a girl. Think about this- would you name your daughter John, William, or Steve?Actually, why not name your son Sophia? I bet most people who claim that not liking masculine names on a girl is sexist would never dream of giving a boy a feminine name. Hmm...Anyways, my point is that I don't respect these rude comments that are blindly accusing others of being sexist, when, in reality, they just have a different opinion on giving genders names intended for the other.Sorry for the rant, had to get that off my chest ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
I think the name Sydney is very refined, beautiful and very weird in a good way. Very unique and beautiful, I really wish my name was Sydney.
I like the spelling Sidney for a boy.Sydney is such a pretty name! I’m really considering to use this.
I love the name Sydney because it’s my name! The name Sydney is for girls and boys but it's more commonly spelled Sidney for boys.
Sydney is nice, bright, friendly and lively for a boy and a girl equally. Unfortunately I have not enough ties with Australia to choose a place-name like this. But for a character.. of course!
My name is Sydney and I've only ever had one problem with it, people thinking I'm named after the city in Australia. I was named after a character in Melrose Place.
My name is Sydney, and I was named after my grandfather Sidney (note the I, that's the spelling most boys go by, at least in my school). This name has always had positive connotations, because it's my name, and also because my grandfather fought in WW2 and was the bravest person in my family. I really wish I got to meet him (he died before I was born), but if I had, I probably wouldn't have this name. For everyone saying that this is just a male name, all of the boys in my school (there are about 5 Syd/Sid people in my school, myself included) have the spelling Sidney, and there are only 2 of them out of the 2, 000 or so kids there. This is a unisex name now, tilted more to the feminine side.
I just don't see this name on a woman. It is a man's name as far as I'm concerned, especially spelled this way.
My name is Sydney and I was born in 1969. Growing up I thought my name was awesome! I was unique and always kept people guessing. A week did not pass without someone saying "what a beautiful name", "how unique" or, "how can I forget a girl named Sydney?". I was even roomed with a guy my freshman year of college (they fixed it quickly). The best story was getting letters to register for the draft! The beauty of the name was the uniqueness. Now it is common and I do not get the comments anymore.. I joke that I started the trend! :)
I think Sydney is a beautiful name and Syd can be used whichever gender and I think that nowadays there is more girl usage but I know many Sydney's and they are awesome.
My name is Sydney and I couldn't be more proud of it. I enjoy my name and think my parents chose very well. I don't know many Sydney's but I know that it is a pretty popular name.
My name is Sydney and I’m a girl. My grandfather picked my name days before I was born and he died. Sydney is a unique, strong, and empowering name to whoever bears it. I’m proud to have such a beautiful name that means so much goodness.
This is my sister's name, and she was named after Sydney Ellen Wade, a character in the movie The American President. My sister is thoughtful and righteous, albeit she now has a low patience level for certain things. I personally think this is a nice name, despite the somewhat unknown meaning.
I think Sydney can be used for both genders, I used it as a boy name in one of my stories I wrote, but I did spell it Sidney, so yeah. I think it can be used either way and I love it when there is a character in a book named Sydney (or Sidney) because I have never met a Sydney outside of where I live.
A very pretty girls name, like the city, doesn't sound much like a boys name.
Let's just get something straight. Just because a name is commonly used doesn't mean you shouldn't use it. But if you decide to use it just to be trendy, that's the worst reason ever. Now that that is out of the way, I can talk about the name itself, Sydney. I only could see it on a boy if the actual name was Syd/Sid. I can see both Sydney and Syd on a girl though. To me, the name Sydney sounds fairly attractive and youthful. Those of you who say it's a bad name because it is sometimes used on a boy, stop. There's nothing wrong with a name that can be used on both boys and girls. What about Sam and Morgan? They both sound good whether it's a boy or a girl.
As the mom to a "Sydney Paige", I think the name is absolutely beautiful. While I love tradition and traditional names, I think breaking away from traditional names and spellings can be fun and adds interest. I love when I hear names such as "Harper" or "Quinn" or "Peyton" or "Sydney" for girls. Strong and beautiful names... that usually match the bearer!
I love my name and the spelling - Cydney. I am female, but was named after my father's best friend - Sidney (male). My parents thought it would make a nice girl's name but chose the spelling with a 'C' because they believed it was more feminine. There was an actress/dancer by the name of Cyd Charisse so there you have it. When I was growing up the name was very unique, practically unheard of for a girl. So much so that as a child I had adults tell me that it couldn't possibly be my name. Well imagine a 5 year old having to tell adults - it's not only a boy's name anymore. The tables seem to have turned now however. I rarely hear of parents naming their boys Sidney any more.
My mom named me Sydney because my being born meant her dreams were crushed of ever going to Sydney.
I only really associate this name with girls, maybe it's because I'm a girl named Sydney. I personally love my name, it has femininity in it but it's also a little tomboyish and strong. I think it's the perfect balance.
If I might add in- I'd like to say that the name 'Sydney' is a very lovely name indeed! It is also a perfect name for a young man! Although, as my sister (named Sydney, of course) and I sit here and read these comments, we've decided to add some pros and cons. Pros: She's named after a beautiful city, in Australia! Cons: "everyone calls me Squidnee. I've learned to live with it." At the end of the day, the name is perfect, and "we all have fat hearts, and should love all names".
I'm Sedny (this is how my name is spelled) and a woman. I love my name because I got it from the combination of my father and my mother's name.
I like this spelling for girls. And Sidney for boys.
I've seen the name used successfully for both genders, but my Fiance's son is named Sydney and he is named after his grandfather who was a soldier in World War II. He's proud to bear the name and so he should be.
My name is Sydney. Obviously by my username you could probably tell. Not to be biased or any thing like that, but I think it's a really neat name. I was named after my great great grandfather "William Sidney". I don't feel it's a trashy name. I have never met anyone who could make it trashy unless I am :'). It can be used for a boy or a girl. You shouldn't be afraid to use that name just because in one gender it's popular. If I had been a boy my name would have been "Robert Sidney". It's just like every other name. You're just going to be calling that human by that name. As for those saying it's trashy because it's the name of a city, are you saying it's trashy that George Washington's last name is Washington because there is a Washington and a Washington D.C.? Are you saying that because there is a place named after someone's name then that name is a trashy name? Why? It's a name. It's just what you are going to be called... The only difference is that one thing is a place and the other is a person.
Sydney is an amazing name for anyone. My name is Sydney and I love it. I don't care if you think it is "too masculine" or "only for boys". That is being Sexist. What about the names Charlie, Spencer, Kennedy, Jordan, Riley, or Payton. Those are all gender neutral names. I rarely see any guys named Sydney, in fact, if you search what gender the name is you'll find that it's most commonly female. It sounds better as a girl name, but boys who have it aren't gay. That is the magical thing about gender neutral names. They work for boys and girls. The more you know! Now before you go and judge me or anyone else with the name Sydney or people who support my statement, use that organism in your head called a "brain" and think about who you might offend. There may be more than you think.
Sydney is a beautiful name and can be used for both guys and gals.
For those of you who think it's stupid to give a girl a "masculine" name... that's slightly sexist. When I have a kid I plan on naming HER Sydney. Specifically because I imagine a rambunctious, assertive little girl who may like pink but also is one tough cookie.
My sister was born with the name Sydnie. I personally think this is a better way of spelling it. I think Sydney is too generic.
People make such a big deal about what is a male name and what is a female name. Who cares?! Is there some law that states this name is specifically a male name and can't be a female name? I like it for both genders and I like the nickname Sid/Syd. Cool name!
Definitely a boy's name. But of course I'm not a fan of Ashley, Madison, or Aubrey on girls, considering they were once completely masculine and unheard of on females. Sure, a parent can get away with naming a girl Sydney now, considering the plethora of other BOY names that have now become 'tryndee' to stick on females. But in my family, Sydney will forever be a boy's name, because it was just and only that until about 1970. (Most likely Sydney Penny was a big reason for the shoot-up in female popularity). Besides, last time I checked, Sydney Carton in a Tale of Two Cities (from 1859) is a BOY, not a girl.
I am surprised at the negative comments! Sydney is not my name, but I have met lots of Sydney's before and I think it's a very beautiful name. I can't picture a guy with the name.
I like the name Sidney for a boy. Sydney isn't terrible for a girl, and I can actually picture it on an adult/old woman. But the nickname Sid/Syd is terrible!
Sydney is a adorable name for a girl! Personally, I don't like this name on boys. If you name a boy that, spell it SIDNEY.
Too bad this is mainly a girls name now
I REALLY like this on a guy,
Personally I don't think its very feminine nor masculine
It suits both but more masculine.
I find it very disappointing that girls are being given the name Sydney/Sidney. It is a masculine name through and through, and just like Ashley, Lindsay, Leslie, Kelly, Cooper, and Mackenzie, it has been made popular for girls by ignorant and stupid parents trying to rebel or be unique or creative, and creating a trend of girls being named boy names and just generally screwing names up.People, naming your girl Sidney/Sydney is just a bad choice, don't do it.
"Messing up names?" If you're going to criticize parents for being "ignorant and stupid," you might want to try not sounding "ignorant and stupid."
I LOVE the name Sydney. I don't think it is a good name for a boy because it is WAY to femme... but for a girl is is absolutely perfect! By far, my FAVORITE name!
I knew a girl named Sydney who went to a high school with 'Sydney' in its name and who also lived in Sydney. Poor thing. Sydney is the name of a city - not for people!
It's okay. Not particularly sophisticated sounding though.
I know 4 little girls named Sydney, and one adult. It's cool, but enough already!
Ugly name for a girl! Or a boy!
My name is Sydney and I am 14 years old. I like my name a lot -- it's not too common and not too unique. I've met about 5 Sydneys in my lifetime but I have noticed that it's becoming more popular. When I was born there were very few Sydneys. Overall, I like my name. If you dislike it because it reminds you of a beautiful city, keep in mind that there are many cities out there and one of them most likely bears your name too.
Gorgeous name for gorgeous guy! My best friend's name is Sydney, he's a boy.
I ONLY think of Sydney of a girl's name. There is 2 Sydneys in my class, both girls. My cousin's name is Sydney, also a girl. All of there personalities are different, from a mean girl to a lovable girl. This name is so much better than any Cindy.
A polluted city with a high crime rate.
I think this is an okay name for either a boy or a girl. I only know girls with this name though. And, they both have the nickname "Squid". I think it's cute and funny, but they should only be called Squid by friends and relatives, not go by it in school or work.
I'm sorry I just can't like this name. It sounds more like a guys name.
I think Sydney is a lovely name, and to those of you who are saying it's stupid to name your kid after an Australian city - you know that it was used as a first name BEFORE it was used for the city, right? The city was named after a person.
I think it is a pretty name, it reminds me of Australia! (not really)
Do parents suddenly become morons when they have to name their daughters? Sydney is a masculine name. It sounds completely idiotic on girls.
I love the name SYdney. I like the spelling with a Y better than an I.
I definitely prefer both Sidney and Sydney on a boy. It's very handsome and manly.
Plain awful. Why give your daughter the name of an Australian city? Sounds soo trashy. Though there are still worse versions such as Cydny or Cydnee.
I love this cute name for a little girl. This will be the name of my little daughter. I just hope it won't lose its popularity, because it's way adorable.
I like this name for a girl, not for a guy. I don't like the name Sydney spelled with an i either. I have a friend named Sydney and I love to say and write her name.
I don't really think of Sydney as a girls name. But it doesn't seem very masculine either. I guess it's more of a girls name to me because of my friend Sydney. I think the name fits her because she is very artsy and cute.
This name is too masculine to be a female's name. I hate names that were originally boy names and then given to girls. That's just plain tacky.
My name is Sydney and I am a girl. I live in a town of 1000 people and there are 3 girls named Sydney. My grandpa's name was Sidney. It is a horrible name for a boy because it sounds delicate and noble. For this reason I dislike having being named Sydney because I am a rough-and-tumble farm girl.
My daughter is named Sydney, I also have two boys who I would never dream of naming Sidney (male spelling). That name was used for boys a lot around the 1920's, get with the times. My personal favorite saying is the line from the Scream movies "HELLO SYDNEY!"
It irritates the hell out of me when I see Sydney being used on girls - I want to use it for my son after the character Sydney Carton in Charles Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities and I despise the spelling Sidney for boys. It looks like I'm going to have to give that up though since all the "trendy" mothers are using it for daughters nowadays. *sigh*
I LOVE this name and this spelling of it. My daughter's name is Sydney Catherine.
I like this spelling the best for the name.
My eldest daughter is Sydney. I think it is a beautiful name. My father in law hurt my feelings about her name before she was born, saying it sounded like an old man. I like unique names, not weird, just unique and I think her name will stand out.
I am a girl so I think that it is really cool having a name that a boy can have too. People remember my name by the continent Sydney Australia and my sis gets mad because her name has nothing to remember it by so people only remember my name.
Sydney has never been a personal favorite of mine. When I hear the name Sydney I think boy.
I have sort of always imagined the spellings are what separate the name from m/f Sidney: male, and Sydney, female.
I agree that "Sidney" seems more like the masculine spelling and "Sydney" seems more like the feminine version. I do like this name. Crisp but not cold.
I have a friend named Sydney (she's female), and I think it's pretty. And no, I do not think it would sound good for a guy at ALL.
I think this is a very pretty name for a girl, but it has become too popular now. Although there are very few Sydney's in my age group, there are many children named this now.
Awesome name, my daughter's name is SYDNEY.
My name is Sydney, and I would never change my name. I am constantly getting compliments on it, and guys tell me it's sexy for a girl.
Sydney isn't just for guys. Many girls are named Sydney, so watch what you say about the name. I like it.
Sydney is a hideous name for a girl. The nickname Syd is sooo masculine.
My name is Sydney and I don't like it but I have to live with it and Mommy2B u need to stop. I'm a girl and my father picked my name. Whatever, your name is its most likely hideous also.
