I used to think Sydney was a masculine name, but now I think it's very unisex. I wouldn't personally use it but it's still a very good and nice name.

I wish this name had stayed a boy's name. It sounds better on a boy, and there are so many more good girl's names than boy's names already. Sydney is a good name for a girl, but all the best somewhat feminine-sounding boy's names (Sydney, Claire, etc.) get taken and turned into girl's names. Then boys are just left with John and James and Michael.

I hate the name Sydney for a girl. It is a BOY'S name. Just as I hate Joscelyn, Hilary, Vivian and Beverley for a man, as they sound feminine. I dislike strange spellings of names too as it makes it difficult for the person for the whole of their life, having to keep spelling it out.

My name is Sydney and I've only ever had one problem with it, people thinking I'm named after the city in Australia. I was named after a character in Melrose Place.

This name has always had positive connotations, because it's my name, and also because my grandfather fought in WW2 and was the bravest person in my family. For everyone saying that this is just a male name, all of the boys in my school (there are about 5 Syd/Sid people in my school, myself included) have the spelling Sidney, and there are only 2 of them out of the 2, 000 or so kids there. This is a unisex name now, tilted more to the feminine side.

Let's just get something straight. Just because a name is commonly used doesn't mean you shouldn't use it. But if you decide to use it just to be trendy, that's the worst reason ever. Now that that is out of the way, I can talk about the name itself, Sydney. I only could see it on a boy if the actual name was Syd/Sid. I can see both Sydney and Syd on a girl though. To me, the name Sydney sounds fairly attractive and youthful. Those of you who say it's a bad name because it is sometimes used on a boy, stop. There's nothing wrong with a name that can be used on both boys and girls. What about Sam and Morgan? They both sound good whether it's a boy or a girl.

As the mom to a "Sydney Paige", I think the name is absolutely beautiful. While I love tradition and traditional names, I think breaking away from traditional names and spellings can be fun and adds interest. I love when I hear names such as "Harper" or "Quinn" or "Peyton" or "Sydney" for girls. Strong and beautiful names... that usually match the bearer!

I love my name and the spelling - Cydney. I am female, but was named after my father's best friend - Sidney (male). My parents thought it would make a nice girl's name but chose the spelling with a 'C' because they believed it was more feminine. There was an actress/dancer by the name of Cyd Charisse so there you have it. When I was growing up the name was very unique, practically unheard of for a girl. So much so that as a child I had adults tell me that it couldn't possibly be my name. Well imagine a 5 year old having to tell adults - it's not only a boy's name anymore. The tables seem to have turned now however. I rarely hear of parents naming their boys Sidney any more.

I've seen the name used successfully for both genders, but my Fiance's son is named Sydney and he is named after his grandfather who was a soldier in World War II. He's proud to bear the name and so he should be.

I was named after my great great grandfather "William Sidney". I don't feel it's a trashy name. I have never met anyone who could make it trashy unless I am :'). It can be used for a boy or a girl. You shouldn't be afraid to use that name just because in one gender it's popular. If I had been a boy my name would have been "Robert Sidney". It's just like every other name. You're just going to be calling that human by that name. As for those saying it's trashy because it's the name of a city, are you saying it's trashy that George Washington's last name is Washington because there is a Washington and a Washington D.C.? Are you saying that because there is a place named after someone's name then that name is a trashy name? Why? It's a name. It's just what you are going to be called... What about the names Charlie, Spencer, Kennedy, Jordan, Riley, or Payton. Those are all gender neutral names. Now before you go and judge me or anyone else with the name Sydney or people who support my statement, use that organism in your head called a "brain" and think about who you might offend. Definitely a boy's name. But of course I'm not a fan of Ashley, Madison, or Aubrey on girls, considering they were once completely masculine and unheard of on females. Sure, a parent can get away with naming a girl Sydney now, considering the plethora of other BOY names that have now become 'tryndee' to stick on females. But in my family, Sydney will forever be a boy's name, because it was just and only that until about 1970. (Most likely Sydney Penny was a big reason for the shoot-up in female popularity). Besides, last time I checked, Sydney Carton in a Tale of Two Cities (from 1859) is a BOY, not a girl.
