[Opinions] Eleanor, Elizabeth and Margaret
I've been thinking over Elizabeth and Margaret a lot recently. Margaret is for my grandmother and for Margaret Atwood. I reckon that I would probably use the nickname Daisy though, or possibly Meg. I've also been really attracted to Elizabeth after Elizabeth Bennet. Which nickname do you prefer for Elizabeth? I've been thinking about Elle a lot recently but I'm not too sure whether Elizabeth and Eleanor are too similar (Eleanor has been a favourite of mine for awhile). I'd use Nora as a nickname for Eleanor probably but I'm still worried that Elle and Nora sound far too much like Eleanor and like each other (if that makes any sense). WDYT? Any middlename ideas? I've been thinking about Elizabeth Adelaide and Margaret Iris.

For Elizabeth I love these: Betty, Betsy, Bessie, and Bess. I also love Elizabeth "Elizabeth." There is something so beautiful about it. Same with Margaret "Margaret." It is so dignified and serious and beautiful. Kind of solemn. I have loved it ever since reading this poem: http://www.potw.org/archive/potw29.htmlI know a Margaret a year or two younger than me. Her name is Margaret Alice and it is almost a double name. ♥
She's a neat kid too apparently; I don't know her that well, I only graded her papers, but she has cool friends, gorgeous handwriting, and made good grades. :PThis is my own list of Elizabeth combos; you will likely not like them very much
Elizabeth Oriana
Elizabeth Bernadette
Elizabeth Cordelia
Elizabeth Gertrude
Elizabeth Ingrid
Elizabeth Letitia
Elizabeth Lucretia
Elizabeth CordeliaI don't really like Elizabeth Adelaide; even though all of ^ those combos are long almost silly long, I find E. Adelaide kind of overbearing without being especially interesting. (I find mine interesting which redeems it.) Margaret Adelaide, on the other hand - O! Elizabeth Iris, too, is very interesting. Margaret Iris is fine.

Elizabeth Adelaide and Margaret Iris are great. I love Daisy as a nn for Margaret (or even better Marguerite). I dislike the nn Elle and I think if you used the nn Elle it would make Elizabeth too close to Eleanor. I don't think Elizabeth and Eleanor are too close for just two sisters. If you had Elizabeth, Eleanor and Eliana or something that would be too much. I think annoying trends start once there is more than two. Elizabeth with a nn like Bess, Beth, Libby, Lizzie, Izzy, Elise, Eliza, Liza etc would be fine with a sister Eleanor nn Nora

I love Elizabeth and Margaret. I dislike nicknames for Elizabeth, though - if I were Elizabeth I wouldn't use a nickname.

I dislike Margaret because I know several women named Margaret who aren't very nice. I like the meaning, though. How people get Daisy out of Margaret is beyond me. None of the sounds that appear in Daisy appear in Margaret. They also don't mean the same. Using Daisy as a nickname for Margaret is like naming someone Katherine and calling her Izzy. It just doesn't make sense at all and I don't like it when nicknames aren't derived directly from the name. I do like Daisy on its own.Eleanor is lovely though I prefer Elinor. I prefer Nora on its own but it's fine as a nickname for Eleanor. How Elizabeth is still in the top 100 is beyond me. It is a classic, yes, but has been popular for so long. Even Rachel and Rebecca are getting less and less popular yet Elizabeth is still being used. I don't really see its appeal. I wouldn't use a nickname for it at all.

DaisyMarguerite means daisy and both Marguerite and Margaret have the same roots, therefore people use Daisy or Pearl as a nickname for both - they are both directly derived from these names.

Margaret actually doesn't mean daisy. Marguerite is the French word for daisy, but Margaret isn't. Just because they are related doesn't mean they share a meaning. I mean the French word for daisy is marguerite, not Margaret, and they aren't even pronounced the same.

That isn't what I saidIf you'd read my post properly you'd realise this. Margaret and Marguerite both have separate meanings but come from the same roots - roots that mean pearl and daisy and therefore people use the nicknames Pearl and Daisy.

I love all three of those names. Meg is my favorite nn for Margaret, and I like Daisy as well.If you had two daughters named Elizabeth and Eleanor, I wouldn't use Elle for Elizabeth, as it would be too confusing. My little sister Elizabeth is called Lizzy, and that is my favorite nn for Elizabeth. I also love Betsy.Margaret Iris is very pretty. Elizabeth Adelaide is a bit long, but still pretty. Some ideas:Elizabeth Frances
Elizabeth Daphne
Elizabeth Claire :-)

I love the combos Elizabeth Adelaide and Margaret Iris. For Elizabeth I like the nns Ellie or Izzy. How do you get Daisy as a nn for Margaret?

Izzy is lovleyDaisy is traditionally a nn for Margaret as Marguerite is the French word for Daisy.

I've loved Margaret since I was like 13, and that will be our future daughter's name. It doesn't particularly honor anyone for us, although we both have relatives with that name, but I think it's extra special since it would honor your grandmother, especially if you're close to her. I'm not really a fan of Daisy as a nickname for Margaret because the sounds aren't at all alike, and I love the look and sound of Margaret. How do you get Daisy from Margaret again? I forget. Meg is nice. My favorite Margaret nicknames (in order) are Maggie, Margo, and Greta. Sorry, I can go on forever about Margaret. :)(Wait a minute... your grandmother doesn't happen to be that Canadian writer they mention on this site, does she? Because that would be crazy land.)I too have really been liking Elizabeth lately. It's very plain and beautiful. And my middle name is Elyse, so it could be used to honor me. :) Elle is alright. I think my favorite is Ellie, and I also like Libby and Lily. I love Eleanor too, but I couldn't use it anymore. I also love Nora as a nn. Although Nell is also nice. But yeah, if one was to have two daughters named Elle and Nora, especially if Nora was short for Eleanor, it would be kind of odd.Elizabeth Adelaide is great! I pondered that combo the other day. Margaret Iris is also pretty. I haven't thought much on Elizabeth, so the only combo I have aside from Elizabeth Adelaide is Elizabeth Alexandra. We've had Margaret Evelyn picked out forever, so I haven't done much with Margaret either. So all I have is Margaret Aveline. I've only done combos through my A names as middle names, and I have to get going right now so I don't have time to think of more! I'm sure others will give you some lovely ones though. :)

Thank you :-)I'm glad I've found such a fan of Margaret! So many people seem to find it dated or dowdy but I see it as a beautiful classic. I like Maggie as well (in fact I kinda love it) but I've always found it too childish to use as a full time nn (all the nns that I'd use are pretty much for every day use - full names are only for when they're in trouble :P) Meg is lovely though. I'll have to consider that. Oh, and Daisy comes from the fact that Marguerite is the French for daisy.Unfortunately my grandmother is no writer. She's not the most intelligent of people (very opinionated but exceptionally uneducated). It would be pretty amazing if she was a writer. You don't mean Margaret Atwood do you? It would be beyond awesome if she was my gran - I'm studying one of her novels for my dissertation right now. As I mentioned to Joan-ay, I can't believe I didn't mention the name Libby. My sister has always gone by Libby (her full name is Sarah Elizabeth Liberty) but I often forget it. Lily would probably be my favourite but Libby's favourite name has always been Lillian so I've agreed to leave that for her. I've thought of Elizabeth Alexandra as well but I'm leaning towards Eleanor Alexandria instead. Benjamin and Margaret will be such a beautiful sibset! You have fantastic taste :-)

Thanks! Here's to hoping that we'll have a daughter at some point and not just a bunch of crazy boys. :)I think Maggie is a bit childish too, but she'd always have the wonderful Margaret to fall back on when she's older. I think it's nice just by itself without a nickname, but for a little girl I think it needs one.Oh... I apparently jumped over the words "and for" in your post when I read it. Your grandmother and for Margaret Atwood. Silly me.

I absolutely adore Eleanor "Nora" and I really want to use it for a future daughter (Eleanor Natalia). I like Elizabeth too, it's too close to Eleanor IMO. Elle and Nora are cute, but together it just sounds like Eleanor or Eleanora. My favorite nn for Elizabeth is Libby btw. I like both Elizabeth Adelaide and Margaret Iris. Very pretty. My favorite Margaret combos are Margaret Francine and Margaret Frances.

I can't believe I didn't think of LibbyMy sister's nickname is Libby (she's Sarah Elizabeth Liberty so Libby is for both Liberty and Elizabeth). Goodness, I'm not very alert today!Eleanor Natalia is beautiful. I'm tempted to steal that from you!

LOLEleanor Natalia is a must for me. I love the name Eleanor and Natalia would honor my best friend. She's the one who named her daughter after me and it would mean so much to the two of us to have daughters named after each other.

I love Margaret, although I'd use the nn Maggie. Daisy is wonderful, but I'd feel strange using it as a nn since I have no idea how the two names are connected.Elizabeth is nice, too. I know one who goes by Beth and one who doesn't use a nn. Elle is nice; I would probably use Elise.I also absolutely love Eleanor, with nn Nora or Ellie. ^-^ It is similar to Elizabeth, but I wouldn't hesitate to use them both. The nns are the tricky part. I'd feel awkward as an Eleanor, nn Nora, if my sister's nn was Elle. Not sure why; it just looks like Eleanor would have to share her name with Elle. :\ If Elizabeth went by another nn (or neither of them went by nns at all) I don't think there would be any problems.I'm not so great at combos, but....Elizabeth Natasha
Elizabeth Mathilde
Elizabeth Mariah
Elizabeth Celeste (both have a similar sound, but I can't quite pinpoint what it is.... The 'Z' and the 'C'? The 'El' and the 'el'? Maybe a little awkward because of it)
Elizabeth Naomi
Elizabeth Rebecca
Elizabeth Jade
Elizabeth Susannah
Elizabeth DanielaMargaret Leticia
Margaret Francesca
Margaret Cecilia
Margaret Regina
Margaret Delilah
Margaret Evangeline
Margaret Sophia
Margaret Christabella
Margaret RoselleAnd, how about a few Eleanor combos?Eleanor Mariah
Eleanor Catherine
Eleanor Kate
Eleanor Lysanne
Eleanor Matilda
Eleanor Marilyn
Eleanor Willow
Eleanor Lydia
Eleanor Ophelia:]

Elizabeth SusannahMargaret Delilah

Eleanor Lysanna (beautiful)
Eleanor Ophelia (really, really special combo - I'll have to consider this one carefully)
