Just like Hadrian vs Adrian I have been having a hard time deciding if I prefer Ariana or Mariana. I pronounce them ar-ee-AHN-ə and mar-ee-AHN-ə.

Also do you prefer the nn Ari or Mari?

What impressions do you have of these names?

I like the sound of Ariana..
BUT
Here in Italy it means 'Aryan (female)' so if you say it the only thought is for Nazi's theories.

It is unusable imo...although in 2015 there were 47 babies with this name.

I much rather be named Ariana than marijuana (yes, that's all I can think of).

I like Ari as a nickname, but really dislike Mari.

I prefer Mariana. I don't know why, but it just has a better image than Ariana to me. Mariana's feisty and no nonsense, whereas Ariana doesn't have as much substance in my opinion, although it's certainly pretty. I also prefer Mari as a nn.

I've got no impression of Ariana, because I've never encountered one (or a reference to one). So I suppose it naturally looks unfinished to me.

Mariana is Shakespeare and Tennyson, but it's also inconveniently long when Marianne is available. So, my preference would be, first Marianne, then Mariana; Ariana dnf.

I should mention that there is practically no Hispanic naming where I live, outside a small Portuguese community who mostly use the names of Catholic saints as far as I can see.

My nana was named Mariana after a Catholic saint supposedly. They named all their kids based on the saint day name list given to them by their church. Technically my nana was supposed to be Carmen but they pretended that she was born a day later so she would be Mariana according to the saint day. My nana didn't find out until she was an adult that her actual birthday was a day earlier. I think she was born July 16th and they pretended it was the 17th.

Prefer Ariana! Mariana reminds me too much of the trench, much prefer Marina or Marianne!

I like Mariana better. I assosiate the name with Mariana Foster from the tv serie The Fosters. A sweet character. And I find Mari cuter than Ari (in my opinion).

Ariana! Mariana is too close to marinara, imo, even though I love the sauce lol but Ariana is just better.
