Message: "Thora" - Behind the Name

I'm curious as to reactions on the name. I'm not sure whether or not I'd use it, but I've become interested in using more Scandivian/Norse names of late. Thora, Johanna, Jonas, Anders and Sigrid are on the top of the list.

(Jonas is a family name, used in the family since the 1700s when we were still in Sweden)

I always think these names sound really funny beacause they are not spelled that way generally. They just have specific letters that do not exist in english. Like: Þóra - Thora. Jónas - Jonas. Jóhanna - Johanna. Sigríður - Sigrid.

I adore other -ora names, but this one a little less for some reason. Thora Birch comes to mind, though, which is a positive. I think it's the Thor- part that distracts me from the -ora. :-/

It seems like a very traditional, old-fashioned name. I couldn't picture a little girl with this name...

Thora is one of my favorites. it's a strong, striking, but decidedly feminine, atleast to my ears.

I was surprised when my husband said he thought it was cute, but wasn't sure if he could use it. I have time to work on him (laughs deviously to self).

Johanna and Anders are very nice too.

I really like Thora, for some unknown reason. Its not really a name I would go for, but I do like this. I dont know if I would want to use it, which is why I am glad my SO decided for me (a firm NO!). I really like it for someone else's daughter though. I think its beautiful, yet different and strong.

I like Thora. I think it is very sweet. Plus, I love Thora Burch.

I like Jonas, Anders, and Sigrid a lot, too.

Johanna I am on the fence about, if only for pronunciation reasons. It should be yo-han-ah, but people would (at least, I think they would) americanize it to jo-han-ah, which I don't find especially appealing. Even worse, they might think it is a version of Joanna, and, well, pronounce it as such. All and all, kind of a headache.

I love the name Thora - its the name of one of my great-aunts (who apparently I take after more than any of my other relatives - maybe that's part of the appeal? Lol.) It reminds of another name I find very attractive - Thea. I don't love how they *look*, but I find the sound of them both lovely.

I love the name Thora as a nn for Theodora or Dorthea.

Actually, I think I would use it as a whole name!

I also love Jonas, but I know a bunch if them, so it's off my list.

Thora is okay, kind of a nice name...I wouldn't pick it for myself though. I reminds me of the actress Thora Birch.

The guy I'm dating will probalby only allow Jonas - the rest are "too out there" He'd prefer a Lily, David, and Jonathan to my Miriam, Jonas, and Anders.

You know, I like Lily, David and Jonathan. But when put next to Miriam, Jonas and Anders, they seem so "Wonder Bread."
