Subject: Another question for Latin experts: MARCEL
Author: Andy   (guest, 84.128.194.231)

Usually MARCEL is said to have to do with MARK (MARCUS) which is generally derived from Mars. But my Latin dictionary (Menge/Guethling) has the name "Marcellus" and it says: "demin. v. marculus, marcus = Hammer". For the next entry "marceo" it gives the etymological root "mark, merk" (to crush), but it doesn't say, whether the two are related.
Any experts around?
