[Opinions] Virginia
I've been thinking about this name recently. I like the fact it's quite international and Virginia Woolf's a cool namesake. I'm only a bit bugged by the "virgin" part, for instance, would a Virginia risk being teased about that?

I love it, my mother-in-law is named this (Virginia Alice). I don't think there would be any or much teasing.

I think the potential teasing is overplayedI can't hear 'virgin' in the name. It's well known, has worked on many women over the years and yields lots of nice nicknames.I have seen a couple of Virginias online say they never got teased about their name but then I've heard from others with very ordinary mainstream names that did get teased. You can't win! Also, I think the virtue Chastity as a name would be harder to live with.If you were considering Vesta(l) Virginia, I'd beg you to drop it asap ;)

Hee hee! Vesta Virginia!

Hehe...Well, if it helps, my brother used to call people and places with the name Virgina...Vagina. It wasn't a speech impediment either, he just liked calling it that, his being a small boy and all. :)

NoI know several young Virginias (around my age, which is 24), and none of them ever had any problems with teasing. The "virgin" part just really doesn't stand out to me. I mean, obviously it's there, but it's just not what I think of when I hear the name. I think of the state, if anything. I'd use it, particularly because the state holds a special place in my heart.

Ditto. People in the US will think of the state. Virgin won't cross a kid's mind most likely.

Maybe, but it's no biggiePretty much everyone gets teased a little bit for their name. Kids tend to come up with mean little nicknames from the best names. I got called "Bony Joanie" (by my family and kids at school btw). And one of my friends (Delores) ended up being called "Deloser". Though I think Deloser was much worse than Bony Joanie. Anyways, the point is, teasing can happen to people with great names. Someone named Virginia MIGHT get teased. I personally would have never made fun of a Virgina because of the word Virgin though.

I love Virginia. I've only known one, and she went by Ginger. She just didn't think Virginia suited her. I don't think she ever had a problem with teasing. Virgin is a pretty common last name where I'm from, and there were several in my high school. It just seemed like every other name. They weren't teased about it.

Not really..I wouldn't be worried about that sort of thing. If kids want to tease, it really wouldn't matter. My name is Hannah, yet people managed to get 'Stannah Stairlift' out of it.I love Virginia, and the nickname "Ginny".

I like it too. If you are afraid she will be made fun of, homeschool her. Do not let little kids pick on your baby because of her name, and homeschooling will protect her, make her a nice kid, and give her intelligence. I have been homeschooled all my life; I just turned 13 and I am in high school. How many public school kids are in that grade at that age?

I was in high school at age 12And it was a public school. Let's not get into the whole homeschooling vs. public schooling debate, but if you're going to have to homeschool your kid because of her name, maybe you need to rethink the name.

It's semi-illegal where I am, and I'm not in favour of it for various reasons I'm not going to discuss here because it's OT. If I were THAT worried about teasing in relation to a certain name, I'd probably avoid using it. However, A lot of kids get picked in school anyway and survive more or less unscathed. And I know zillions of people who went to public schools and are nice and intelligent. It seems you're using my question as a pretext to boast how smart and precocious you are.

"If I were THAT worried about teasing in relation to a certain name, I'd probably avoid using it."Yeah...that.To answer your original question, I really don't think the "virgin" part of Virginia will stand out to kids and be a cause of teasing, I personally never really notice it.I love the name BTW.

Homeschooling because of a name?That's a bit drastic. :O

I agree..and I think its unnecessary.

It's a beautiful name.
Teasing, I think, tends to occur at a young age(re: names), and the "virgin" thing wouldn't mean anything then.
and anyway,as others have said, to be a virgin isn't a bad thing.

I like Virginia a lot. I know two girls with that name and they never got teased, but they don't live in an English-speaking country, so the connection isn't as near. I wouldn't want to constantly be called a virgin or something, though.

No [m]I had a friend named Virginia and we never even thought of "virgin".It's a gorgeous name besides "virgin" isn't a bad thing.

Exactly"virgin" isn't a bad thing. That's what I said. Being called the opposite of a virgin is what's the bad thing.

I agree it's not a bad thing, but it could be still be awkward or embarassing for a tween or teen to have a taunt linked to this.

TrueBut pretty much all kids that age get teased about something. I don't think being named Virginia is going to add much to that.

I love it in a GP sort of way. It's the name of an old character of mine who's quite dear to me (and her nn's are Gina and Ginny, both which I love). I'm not at all bugged about the virgin part, and I don't even notice/think about it. I'm sure a Virginia would get teased about that on occassion, but it doesn't seem like something that should be a big deal to be teased about. What's so bad about that? Much better than being called the opposite.

I agree!

I love the name, but I think in today's world any little Virginia would be teased horribly. It's unfortunate :-(I think the nickname Ginny is just adorable, though!

I think about this name a lot too and can never figure out if I like it or not. I also love Virginia Woolf and think she would make a great namesake, but I think she's the only reason I try to like it. The virgin part bugs me too. I've never met a Virginia though, so I can't give any input on teasing potential.
