So, I'm doing this new thing where I choose a name theme and ask y'all what you think of names that fit that particular theme. For example, today I have chosen names with meanings that have to do with the sun or the moon. So, here are the names, tell me what you think of them. :)Chandra
Luna
Marama
Menodora
Monday
Purnima
Soleil
Solveig
Sunday
Sunniva
SunshineAton
Helios
Samson

A great theme. Menodora & Sunniva are my favorites from the list. Also, don't forget Selene!

I love Selene.But pronounced see-lee-nee, not se-leen
vote up1
I never heard it pronounced that way.

It's the original pronunciation - like Irene is i-ree-nee.
vote up1
Oh, I never knew that.

I know a dog named Selene (seh-lee-nee).

I love Sorin, Solveig and Sunniva.Marama, Menodora, Purnima and Helios are too exotic and tied to different cultures for me to use.Aton is interesting, especially with the history behind it but I knew one and I couldn't stand him.Chandra is more of a male name to me.Luna, Sunday, Soleil and Sunshine are cheesy to me.Samson is too tied to the biblical story for me. But I'm a practicing Christian, if I wasn't I would probably be fine with it.

I love how you respond to every post like I'm suggesting possible baby names for you. You must really want another one; it's cute. :)

LOL. Those are my opinions, though. :-D I like when people reply this way because it gives me a clear idea of how the names are seen by various people.I do want another child, but not yet. ;-)

Chandra - it's okay...I get the same sort of vibe from it as I do from Sonya, but Chandra's more exotic sounding...and I prefer Sonya.Luna - I associate it with Harry Potter; I like it for other people.Marama - okay, but NMS? I think of marimba music...would prefer Mariama, probably just because I'm more familiar with it.Menodora - I'm fond of it, but I prefer the spelling Minodora...spelled as Menodora, it reminds me of menopause.Monday - probably my least favorite day name.Purnima - sounds unpleasant to me.Soleil - I think it sounds pretty; I like it for other people.Solveig - one of my favorites.Sunday - sounds religious.Sunniva - it's okay; I find the 'neev' sound slightly off-putting.Sunshine - maybe not very wearable, but I like it.Aton - "a ton"? "at on"? Unfamiliar and boring sounding, which IMO is a bad combination.Helios - I guess it could work, but mainly it reminds me of helium.Samson - it's okay; sounds like a preppy version of Samuel to me...also reminds me of Samsung products and the Regina Spektor song.Sorin - is it pronounced so-REEN? If so, interesting, but maybe too much like "serene" for me to really like.
Uh...so I sort of like Luna, Marama, Menodora, Soleil, and Sunshine.I love Solveig. My least favorites are Aton and Monday.

Chandra - I like it but I'd only use it on a boy. Luna - Obviously I like this one (;Marama - I know a Marama, and I like this name a lot. It's very sweet. Menodora - sounds like a hatMonday - Hmmm. While I have a soft spot for Tuesday, Monday doesn't work for me.Purnima - Purrrrrrnima. It's a great name for a cat!Soleil - Torn. I like it, but do they use it ever in France? Also I wouldn't use it because here Solay is a brand of crisps.Solveig - I dislike the -veig soundSunday - No good, not with sundaes being an ice cream thing. If it wasn't for that I think I'd really like it.Sunniva - Hmmmmmmmmmmm. I'm not sure. I do like it, but it seems kind of arrogant somehow.Sunshine - Ugh. No. It's way too cheesy. "Here are my daughters, Sunshine and Candy Floss..." ---Aton - I don't like. Helios - Wow. Very badass. A difficult name to pull off but one that would be so cool if the person managed it.Samson - Ugly.. I've never liked this.Sorin - I love Sorin. I think I prefer the Soren spelling more, but it's a really great name either way.Can I add Somerled? It's one of my top GPs (:

Purnima WOULD be a great name for a cat.

Chandra - sounds really harsh to me and kind of a clunky transition with the consonants
Luna - I think it's cute and I see the appeal but I know I'd want to nickname any Luna I ever met 'Loony' because it would make me giggle. The fact that I want to do that so much makes me see it as unusable lol
Marama - It's pretty and I know one and she pulls it off well. It does remind me of the dog breed maremma though...
Menodora - Sounds like menopause
Monday - I hate Mondays so no thanks.
Purnima - unattractive sound to me but I like the meaning. I'm sure I'd like it more if I met someone with the name
Soleil - Super pretty. It sounds a little flakey on a real person when I've heard it but I see the appeal.
Solveig - I love this name so much. It's honestly one of my favourite names to say aloud but it would be too weird for me to use it with my cultural background. I would love to meet one IRL life though. I'd totally do a name nerd dance of celebration.
Sunday - I enjoy Sunday as a name. It's quirky and sounds happy. I'm not sure I'd like to be named it myself but I enjoy it.
Sunniva - I love this, it has been on my list for years. I'm not sure it would be a comfy fit for me to ever use but I think it's gorgeous and severely underused. I also love the nickname Sunny.
Sunshine - I have a friend named this and her last name is Day so it's hilarious (and she goes by Sunny 95% of the time). She totally pulls it off and I love her and I smile every time I hear her name. When I told her that her name always makes me grin like a lunatic, she said lots of people like work colleagues and strangers she needs to call for her job tell her the exact same thing.

Monday and Sunday are two of my guilty pleasure names for girls. I love them.
Sunniva is nice as well. For a boy, I like Helios.

Hmm - can't say I find any of them compelling. I like Solveig and Sunniva, but they are just too far removed from my naming traditions and surroundings for me to ever consider them. And Soleil is always masculine to me!When I saw Sorin, I thought it might be a form of Søren, which I like but with the same reservations as for Solveig and Sunniva. There was a recording of some kind, long ago, that I heard about from a friend but never heard. The title did stay with me, though: "How Can You Doubt That The Whole World Is Jewish When Even The Sun's Name Is Sol?" Good for a giggle.

On your list, I like Chandra, Solveig and Sunniva. Other names with sun or moon meanings I like are Elanor, Selene, Sunnifa and Synnöve / Synnøve.
