Virginia
I have been thinking about this name a lot lately, and I believe it has found a place in my top ten. Not only do I happily live in [Northern] Virginia, but my great-grandmother's name was Virgie, so it would honor her. I am thinking about the name Virginia Caroline, as I have ancestors who settled in Caroline County, VA (and one of my best friend's names is Caroline). What are your thoughts and comments about the name Virginia? Be honest, please.

I only know one Virginia, but the name is in my top 10 as well.
It's very classy and timeless but it still has the cute side needed for a child. It's one that works for any age and any personality, I think.Wasn't it the name of the first baby born in America?
That's a cool association, imo.

Its grown on me a lot over the yearsMy mum's name is Virginia Louise, so while when I was younger I thought she had quite an unfortunate name, now I think it is classic and dignified and quite pretty. I would seriously consider using it as a middle name. Virginia Caroline is a darling combo, I really like it! I'm thinking something along the line of Lucy Virginia or Alice Virginia. I also love the nn Ginny and mum is also called Ginia, Gin and Ginger by her family. However I believe the American pronunciation is Virgin-ya, while in Aus (and the UK as far as I know) it is pronounced Virgin-ee-uh, which I must say I greatly prefer.

Surprisingly, I really like the name Virginia. I say surprisingly only because it seems like the kind of name I wouldn't care two hoots about, but something about it really sparks my interest. Maybe it's because I've never known a Virginia. Maybe it's because it perks my old-fashioned fancy through that famous phrase, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" and so it makes me think of serious-faced little girls in sweet 1940's winter pea coats and handwritten letters and crackly black and white movies. Whatever the reason, I really like it.Virginia Caroline is very beautiful and austere, very proper and upright and stiff. I imagine it written in big, ornate writing on thick parchment paper, and I am very impressed.A book on naming I read has described Virginia as a strong "Yuppie" name which I wrinkled my nose at, but I rather disagree. It has more of an intellectual vibe to it, more historical and substantial. When I think of yuppie names I think of flat glossy cutout names with a strong 90's vibe and Virginia is for sure not one of those.

It's really nice, and V. Woolf's a cool namesake, though the "virgin" sound bothers me a bit, it could lead to teasing.

Honestly? I don't like it.Virginia is one of those names I *never* warmed to. I think it's cold, detached, and dated. Also, the word "virgin" being in there doesn't do it any favors (not that it's bad to be a virgin, but I'm just sayin').Virginia Caroline is too state-y for me.

Despite the whole "virgin" thing, I think it's pretty. I love Ginny as a nickname. Virginia Caroline sounds lovely. It makes me think of Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, so it does seem a bit like different state names put together, but it's still usable. Virginia Carolina would be a bit much, but Virginia Caroline works. I love Caroline btw.

I like it. It's dignified and pretty and it has an interesting history. Also, it reminds me of this: http://www.newseum.org/yesvirginia/.
Virgie is a nice little name.

Sorry, but I don't like it at all.
It always makes me think of vaginas, so..yeah..And it also makes me think if virgins (because of the beginning in the name).

I love Virginia, nn Ginny. I don't live in the US, so the fact it's a US state isn't an issue.

I think it's neat on other people. Personally I wouldn't use it because of its meaning, but it's cute and sprightly and fun.

I love it. My grandmother's name is Charlotte Virginia so the name is close to my heart.

Yay! I love Virginia. I have for a long time, but it has really jumped up in my list in the last few months to the point that I'd even consider using it. It's a such a beautiful and refreshing name. I actually mentioned it to my DH the other day and much to my surprise he didn't have any reaction-- which is a good thing. I think he likes that you could use Ginny as a nn.I think Virginia Caroline is pretty, but a bit much since both names are state-related.
