I think it's a gorgeous name for a girl, but prefer the spelling Arielle.

As a mother to a little girl, let me say that this name is firmly in Disney Princess territory. Historical usage aside, this one is all girl, in North American society anyways. I asked my 6 year old what she thought of Ariel for a boys name and she looked at me like I was straight up crazy..."Ariel is a PRINCESS, Mommy". So yeah, I'm not sure any little boy would appreciate having to contend with that growing up. There are better ways to build character ;)

Given Shakespeare and Sharon, it's got to be male. However, for the same reasons I don't think it's a good idea.

I prefer Ariel for a boy and Arielle for a girl. I'm not really sure why The Little Mermaid is a bad association. Personally, it's one of my favourite children's movies, and I would love to have a mermaid as a namesake!

I don't think it is usable now. It's not usable on a boy anymore because people assume it is a girls name, and it's not usable on a girl because people associate it with The Little Mermaid. Some combos anyway:
Ariel Griffin
Ariel Leander
Ariel Leo
Ariel Leopold
Ariel Lionel
Ariel Llewellyn
Ariel RichardAriel Kiara
Ariel Muirgen

I prefer it for a girl, however it is too tied to The Little Mermaid for me to use.
